Vortec 6.0 Mileage

Hello all,

I picked up a new 2007 GMC Sierra K1500 extended cab with the Vortec Max package (6.0, HD Trans, 9.5 rear-end, oil cooler) with 3.73 gears and factory 20" wheels. I've installed a K&N Cold Air kit and a Flowmaster Series 40 muffler, synthetic oil is going in on the next oil change. I just turned 5,000 miles today and still getting (what I consider to be) lousy mileage, about 11.5mpg overall between city and highway driving. All this and I don't have a heavy foot either. Just curious what others with the same set-up are experiencing for MPG's???

I have a VMAX, CC, 4x4, 3.73, 20" wheels. I have a GMPP CAI and a Edge tuner. I did not install the tuner and CAI until 12K miles. I did not notice a significant improvement in mileage until at least 10K. I am getting around 14.5 in town. No long road trips in a while, so I cannot tell you about highway mileage.

I have the same truck, except a crewcab. I drive about 80-90% city/rush hour and about 10-20% Freeway. I get about 13.5 now and was getting 14 in the summertime. The Edge didn't help squat either, I got the same or better before I had it. I don't hammer on it, but I most certainly don't baby it either. I like to enjoy the power. :D

I have almost the same setup. With the exceptions: crew cab, 2wd and GMPP intake.

Before I installed the intake mpg was just over 15. With intake mpg stays steady around 14.5

Same (6.0, CC, 2007, NBS, 3:73, 2WD, 20 wheels) 14 MPG on each tank

switching to synthetic MAY help (dont quote me on it) and as the engine gets broken in more, your mileage should improve.

In 1997 I was considering buying a 4WD F250 supercab, with a 4 speed auto transmission and 460 V8 big block engine. When I asked the salesman about the fuel economy, I got what I consider perhaps the classic answer to this type of question for a vehicle that size:

"Anywhere between 6 and 14 MPG, depending on how you drive it and what you haul/tow with it".

I get 15/16 around town and 17/18 on the highway with mine.

lol, that's what I get with the 5.3L and 3.42 gears. Guess I should have gone for the big boy.

And that's more than I get with 5.3 liter and 3.73 gears, no matter how easy I take it with the truck. And I run it on 89 octane (mid-grade). I simply do not believe these numbers for the 6.0 liter. Sorry.

my '05 6.0Ls does 12.5 ( was doing 13.8 in summer ) I use 4wd alot anymore, and recentlydid true dual Flowmaster Super 44s. Flowmaste is the main sorce of mpg robbing since those mufflers aren't the most free flowing, just sound great. After you change to synthetic you should see a few tenths higher in mpg ( like 11.5 to anywhere to 12.0 ) and if you get your PCM programmed to your choice of octane, tire size, intake & exhaust, you could see it bump to maybe 13 or 14 ( not guaranteeing it, but its posible )

also it depends on the area you live in, in well populated areas ( pretty much where all the flat ground is ) or out in the country a little with the hills are of all type of evelations like the area im at

07 ECSB 2WD VMAX 20" wheels, Right now I am getting around 13 in the city and 16 on the highway. Before the winter gas kicked in it was 1.5 mpg better for both. One thing I hve noticed. My comute to work is only 3.7 miles. The truck never gets a chance to warm up. When this happens, I am getting 11.5 to 12 mpg. Once it gets hot, the milage does improve to 14 to 15 mpg city driving. Also at 65 to 75 mph on the highway the DIC will show 18 to 20 mpg. Once over 75 mph it drops to 16 mpg. Wish I could keep it down there but the truck likes to run 80. Bad truck!!!

While I agree, based on my experience, that those numbers are a bit "optimistic", keep in mind that the 6.0 engines (L76 in the 1/2 tons only) have VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and the 5.3's do not. This helps offset the MPGs making the 6.0's very close to the 5.3's. Within 1 mpg anyway.
