Help! Key Won't Turn!

Something is wrong with my truck! When I put the key in, it won't turn. The steering column is not locked, the battery is not dead....just won't turn! I've had 5 different people trey to get it to turn, but it won't. Anyone have any ideas?

Not sure what year you have but my 05 Silverado did this several times. I was able a couple of times to jiggle the key for a bit and get it to turn... The last time, I had to get a locksmith out to fix it. Apparently, one of the lock cylinder internal parts was stuck or broken. Once he fixed it I never had another problem.

This happens for me whenever I use the spare key. The little tiny one, I don't know if that is the one you are using, but whenever I jiggle it around it turns. This never happens with the regular key though.

You probably need a new cylinder. If your going to do it yourself I would get the new one have it coded. You need to get the key to turn to get the old one out. Usually the last tumbler is the one binding a little so I usually put the key in and TAP it with a hammer to try and force the last one up. This isn't a fix though just a way to get it to turn once for replacement.

Well if that is the case, then why does the normal key work fine, but my spare keys (all 3 of them) not turn unless they are jiggled.

That was for the original poster I think he is having problems with all of them. For you I'd take my spares to the wire wheel and make them a little worn. When I cut a new key they are always hard to turn unless you wear em out on the buffer for a second.

The dealership just took a look at it and said that the master cylinder was busted and needed to be replaced, as well as a new key. $300 in all. At least I can drive it again! Thanks for all replies. Appreciate the brain storming!
