Engine Cleaning Tips

Just wondering if anyone out there has any good tips on cleaning their engine. I like to keep mine as clean as possible. Lately I've noticed the valve covers getting pretty dirty. Didn't know if it was alright to spray the covers down with the coil packs right on top of them. Had a buddy who sprayed his Camaro with degeaser and then the car wash hose and his car wouldnt start back for a while.

The Camaro is a different breed(I assume he's got the dist behind the water pump) you couldn't get those things wet. I like Simple Green, spray it all over warm er up and hose er off.

I just spray mine down with the hose everytime I wash the truck, use a lite spray.

x2 on the simple green here. simply works the best for me. if thiungs are really grungy - do it while the engine is still warm. spray on, go eat lunch, rinse off with warm water - repeat if still a bit caked on in spots. just use a bucket - that will solve most of the problems associated with bearings and such - engines can handle moisture (othewise they'd pretty much crap out in the rain anyway)

 

I then blow out the spark plug wells and finish off with a detail spray and viola! shiny!

Still looks good under there. Even got some shiny new wiring to boot. Along with a new idler pulley, tensioner pulley, belt, and starter relay.

I try to keep from "washing" mine but I know as long as you run it and get it hot once you are finished, most of the water is removed right away.

 

If you are into detailing under the hood, there are a number of spray silicone detailing products that work really good. I use a product from Duragloss called Ultimate Detail. The part # is 265 and it comes in a yellow can.

Those idler pullies were not one of GMs better ideas. I replaced them when I had it also. I even bought GM OEM parts and they still didn't last... Go figure.
