Gearing Question

I've got a vmax with 4.10 gears.....my girlfriend and I are planning a trip for next summer that is going to run us approximately 10k miles in total. How much gas would i save much by switching my gears out to 3.73's or 3.42's? I'm unsure if i would actually save anything after having to buy the gears, but just checking into it

not as much as you would think....the 4.10s are actually getting better hwy mpg w/ the 6.0L due to the VVT and AFM....from what I've experienced it will stay in 4cyl mode significantly longer with the lower gearing.

Just my .02 though

Even in that case the amount of money you would spend on a complete gear swap just would not justify the "potential" gas savings IMO.

Where the hell can you go that is 10,000 miles?

You'll spend $2142.86 in gas at 14 MPG.

If the gear change gets you 1 MPG better, you'll spend $2000.00.

Even if it nets you 2 MPG, you'll still spend $1875.00

Not a lot of difference in the big picture.

Better take a lot of duct tape. 10,000 miles in a vehicle with a woman is going to be a near death experience...

thank you...thats exactly what i was looking for....i didn't think i was gonna gain 10mpg or anything, but i was just wondering what the difference would be. definitely not worth doing....it'll go towards my new ecm instead :(

as for where can we go for 10k....we're currently living in northern alberta (approx 700 miles north of montana/canada border) and we're going back to our home province to get married. we're from Newfoundland & Labrador, which is north-east of maine. One way on streets and trips is listed at 4200 miles and we're gonna take some detours on the way back to make a little trip out of it.

Congrats fellow Albertan on the Marriage. My brother in law and I have the same Truck except he has 3.73 and I have 4.10's. Even with the 5.3 litre we get exactly the same mileage between Edmonton and Calgary ( using onboard trip computer ). I would suggest keeping the speed down would save you more fuel than the gear change. 10kph = a bit over 1 mpg. Drive through the states and save 25% on fuel costs. $75 tank in the US Vs $100 plus in Canada. Thats why I holiday in the US.

Sounds like a lot of fun actually... Good luck to you guys. Might want to stash that roll of duct tape though... just in case. :(
