Front End Shimmy While Driving

Hello,

 

My 2001 chevrolet 1500 4x4 tends to shake at different speeds. I feel alot of the vibration through the steering wheel. The tires have been balanced recently. Any suggestions on what I should check?

tie rods, u joints, bushings, motor/trans mounts, suspension (coil, shocks), leaf springs...i-shaft (maybe), though to tell with the vague discription. What speeds does it happen, temperature, sunny, windy, rainy, snowy, full acceleration, cruise, highway surface, city surface, is it a vibration with no noise, is the caliper stuck, wheels tightened improperly, a little more detail please.

How many miles on the vehicle? Did it shake before the balance? Been mudding lately? Were the tires rotated when they were balanced?

Tires were balanced not too long ago, I've rotated tires but it hasn't made much of a difference. I have 156000km on the truck. Rims are free of mud. Shaking occurs at 50-60km/hr and again at 80-90km/hr on all road conditions. There is alot of vibration coming through the steering wheel.

Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft...you feel it when turning? There is a $50 replacement part online (new GM design) easy to install it also!!

 

 

No the vibration is felt going down the road in a straight line? I can't see the steering shaft causing that. Does that new design steering shaft cure the rattling in the steering when making a turn at slow speed?

I'm experiencing the same thing as jeepunlimited80. Just recently started doing this. Driving straight, I get a back-and-forth vibration in the steering wheel between 55-65mph. Goes away above 65. I'm thinking I'll replace the front hubs and shocks all the way around. Anybody else have this problem and fix it? How did you do it?

Most trucks have a natural shimmy throughout the frame at about 60mph. I know mine shakes all over the place and as soon as i get past 65 its smooth sailing. It may just be normal shimmy associated with high mileage. Does the steering wheel actually move to the point where it seems like the brakes discs are warped? Or is this vibration more centered around the floor? These trucks have rack and pinions right? (never really looked). Check steering fluid and maybe pump.

 

You start getting into ball joints and all that stuff i can imagine its going to get expensive fast.

Stock wheel- and tire-size for me.

 

Definitely feel it in the steering wheel itself around 60 mph. Must be hitting a resonant frequency in the suspension with the rotational imbalance.

I wouldn't describe the shaking/shimmy as bad as stopping with warped rotors, but it's almost like a wheel is completely off balance. You can see, and obviously feel, the steering wheel moving.

If they were running custom wheels what would you attribute it to?

 

 

I'm not Daddy but I assume he thinks the aftermarket wheels might not be hubcentric or missing the centering ring (if hubcentric and equipped with a ring) OR he could be referring to the rear brake clips not being removed.

    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.

If their vehicles can save 1–2% fuel by using a special fuel economy lubricant, then that OEM can drastically reduce the amount of fines they need to pay.”   I liked this and the following paragraph as well but it’s really only touching the beginning of the benefits OEMs see from spec’ing these oils. After you factor in “out of warranty” service work and new car sales when these engines fail before their time, it’s a good racket for them. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!
