Mpg Difference Between 3.2x And 3.42 Ratio?

You probably remember me posting about my truck getting aweful MPG for a RWD with the 4.8. I tought I had the lowest gear ratio, but I have the 3.42.

 

Which one is the "standard" one ? the 3.2x or the 3.42 ?

 

Can the difference between the two affect gas mileage enough to take or give 3-4 MPG ?

Not likely. The difference in rpm at highway speed between the two, after accounting for HP differences, would be small (a few percent maybe).

But there is a big difference is gas mileage between the 3.2x and the 4.10, right ?

Not likely. The difference in rpm at highway speed between the two, after accounting for HP differences, would be small (a few percent maybe).

 

 

I would agree. A higher gear ratio may affect the fuel efficiency of a vehicle but 3-4 MPG is a bit much.

Yes there is bud. 4.10s will get you slightly better city mileage and 3.42 will get you good highway mileage

Haha, in a bad fix here. I don't do alot of mileage, but it is mostly city.

You can't really compare the two because they have different applications. Heavy Trucks that use 4.10's would get bad fuel economy with 3.23's and lighter trucks that use 3.23's would get bad fuel economy with 4.10's.

 

They are desinged for different applications.

Almost no difference between 3.23 and 3.42 ratios. Something like 5% actual ratio difference would not be noticeable in fuel economy.

what do you consider bad fuel millage? I'm avg. 14.5+ around town 18.5-20 mpg @ 55mph and 16 mpg @ 70 mph in my 03 SS.

yeah, city driving + 3.42/3.23 + Lead Foot = Sucking gas like its going out of style

10 this winter and lucky if I get 12-13 this summer according to my prediction. But yeah, while I don't drive alot, there's alot of red lights and a bit a idling there too. But darnit, I always keep it down under 1500 rpm!

 

Ah well, I guess I'll be able to get a better average when I do long highway rides to go fishing this summer.

If you're sitting at many red lights, it doesn't matter what gears you have. You will be getting ZERO miles per gallon.

 

I just made a 400 mile run with my 06 4X4 crew cab with 3.42 gears and averaged 19.7. This was runnning about 65 the whole way.

 

It's a different story when I'm in town, I will get 10 to 12. Same as you - sitting at red lights.
