Half-ton Diesel?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I for one am really waiting (impatiently) for that new 4.5L Dmax that should be coming out in half-tons.

I would love to have the power of an LB7 in a half-ton crew 4x4.

I know diesel is pretty ridiculous (I am in the trucking industry) but consistent 25+ MPG is quite feasible with tuning.

The reasons why I want a diesel is that it is a perfect all around vehicle for me...

Tinkering/Mods/Tuning etc. are as abundant if not more then for a corvette.

Crew Cab is good for people hauling

Its a truck...(No explanation needed there)

Can off-road

Nice enough for a night on the town...

It can be quite fast

oh and did I mention the power?

its fast...

Only drag racer I know of that can tow its own trailer instead of being hauled around in one.

Decent mileage compared to a gas powered rig...

Plus I am 6'2" and the C6 corvette is not very comfortable for me.

I really hope they don't scrap this vehicle. It would be a nice toy to have

NO, With gas today at 3.85 and diesel at 4.99 a gallon its just not a money saver espically when you add the diesel option of probably $5-6K on to the price of the truck. A gasser will average at least 18-20 mpg on a trip and if your lucky the 4.5L diesel will probably only average 24-25 mpg. Just not worth it in my books. In 2012 the gassers will be HCDI engines and will get better mileage for lots less $$$$.

Aww crap I said dodge please don't ban me... lol

EDIT: Crap! I said the D-word again...

It will depend on where diesel and gas prices are. Honestly I think if they were to put as much effort into diesel engines as they have on gas motors, you'd see double the advances in mileage on a diesel as you have on gas. My dad once had a 1986 CC dually 4x4 with the shitty 6.2 that pulled an average of 18-20 WITHOUT OVERDRIVE. If he'd had an overdrive it could have made 25 easy. That was in the mid-80's. Since then, all that I've really seen has been more emissions controls and very little in efficiency improvements on diesels, but insane improvements on gas motors. What gives?

I have owned quite a few diesel trucks in the past and the EPA has all but destoied the appeal of diesel, everything from the extreamly high fuel prices to the highly tempromental smogg controls they have forced onto the trucks in order to meet insane polution requirments. These new trucks are going to be even worse for some time to come till they get all the kinks worked out of the systems. The new PSD 6.4 gets about 15% worse mileage than the outgoing 6.0 psd, and it was about 15% worse than the prior 7.3 that was relativley free of elaborate emission systems, and ran much cooler than the latter two motors, so who knows if the atage that a diesel will out last a gas is even remotely true anymore. I am in the process of switching as much of our business fleet of 3/4 ton trucks back to gas 1/2 ton HDs as quickly as possible. I already swapped out my personal diesel powered vehichels back to gas powered ones.

5 years ago I was dreaming of the day I could go out and buy 1/2 ton diesel pickups, now I could care less. Thanks to the tree huggers and uncle sams gullabilty.

$3.85??? man I wish! gas right now is $4.14 in michigan...I believe diesel is around $4.60

In Michigan, if you compare the two at 12,000 miles a year:

18 MPG (667 gallons) $2761 in a gasser

24 MPG (500 gallons) $2300 in a diesel

you really only save about $500 a year in fuel costs, you will never recoup the expense. If we look at it more globally, you're burning 167 gallons less a year, decreasing your demand on foreign oils...all be it a small decrease.

If your buying a diesel, buy it for the power and towing capability. not to save on fuel.

I think it might be a stretch to think this 4.5 motor can get 25mpg with all the 2010 emmision crap on it, most of all the 2008 diesel 3/4 tons dropped in fuel mileage compard to the 2006/07 trucks. DPFs and regen cycles hurts the mileage. The 2010 regs are even worse then the 2008 regs, So its going to have even more crap on it than the current 3/4 tons are required to use to meet the 08' requirments.

Efficiency has improved greatly on both the gas and diesel side. They are putting out more power, with roughly the same, or even increased fuel mileage. The 4.5l may get the same mileage that the old 6.2l might have possibly gotten, but a stock 6.2l put out 130 hp and 240 ft lbs of torque (or 143 hp and 253 ft lbs or torque, depending on the year) while the 4.5l is supposed to put out 310 hp and 520 ft lbs of torque. Contrary to what the news reports may tell you, we as North Americans prefer power over fuel mileage.

i still believe that all of these motors could get better fuel mileage than they do. I seriously believe that the oil companies know where to spend money to keep it from happening. If all we have to do is add a chip to a diesel to reprogram it for fuel mileage there is no reason that the designers/engineers wouldn't be able to figure out how to get way better mileage.

Same here

I almost bought a new '95 K1500 extended-cab with the 6.5 Turbo-Diesel,But they were still having issues with the injector pumps,I didn't want to be "stranded on the road' while on one of my trips to the races. So I passed and found a leftover '94 K1500 extended-cab with the ol' reliable 350!

Like you cc I've been dreaming of the day when I could buy a 1/2-ton diesel....Looks like I'll keep on dreamin'

You also have a much smaller displacement, and alot less weight. I do believe the numbers are inflated slightly but not to the degree you are saying. I'm thinking about 22ish.

agreed.

I think it's the EGT's (that generally get increased with chips), that worries manufacturers.

    • .30” of rain all month and it’s been weeks since that. “Mowed” our two properties today for the first time since July 2nd. It only took 30 minutes because all I had to do was level some weeds and saplings in a few problem areas. Everything else is dead.
    • Dealer reported a failed shifter module assembly so the whole shifter is getting replaced. Yet another premature repair… up to $12,000+ in extended warranty payout in only 5 years and 80,000 miles!
    • According to the dealer it’s an internal leak/failure of the compressor.  Again, another failure that shouldn’t happen at only 5 years and 80k miles.  For some reason the compressors must be hard to come by right now, because the truck’s been at the dealer almost a week and they just located a compressor at another dealer several states away today.  We’ll see if this fixes the issue.
    • I'm not sure if this should be a reply on this thread or a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - ACDelco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles. When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so i did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance.
    • I wasn’t commenting on your post. Certainly wasn’t arguing. I was making an observation on my long term experience with supposedly proper length of driving for proper heat cycles. Works for me. Although I have seen water or vapor come out of exhaust when vehicles weren’t run very long and shut off. It’s very humid in the morning. Then hot and humid.
