Any Drawbacks With Buying Wheels That Are Pitting?

Recommended Posts

I found some cheap wheels, which are brand new, the only problem is they have some pitting in the pockets ...

The pitting is not bubbling. Will the pitting cause them to rust or the chrome to flake? Will these wheels last year-around (snow, ice, rain, heat), or would you advise against me getting these?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: forgot to show what the whole wheel looks like (added 2nd image), I think they're the GM CK948.

other than that fact that they are pitted not really, if I liked them and they were cheap I would buy them.. If its something that you are going to lose sleep over then pass.

They will only get worse. If you can run them in the summer only and keep the brake dust / soap suds out, they will last much longer. Salt loves to eat those babbies. There may be some impurities trapped under the chrome or a thin coat that caused the porosity in the first place.

If they are cheap enough, go for it. Nice wheels!

Would salt really eat these away? How long would they last? How much do you think re-chroming would cost?

BTW, the dealer I can get them from is asking $640, I consider that cheap (since they are normally $1500+ in perfect condition), do you?

With them being pitted and using them year 'round will lead to a shorter life, I'd try to get 'em to go lower... Doesn't hurt to ask, right? Maybe offer $450.. See if they scoff or bite and come down some more. $500 or so wouldn't be "too" bad of a bite, if you have to replace 'em in a year or two.. ?

You can really stretch the service life of those just by keeping them clean, buffing them up with 000 steel wool pads and waximg them regularly. Doing so will slow down the advance of the pitting big time. I'd make sure they were CHEAP!

There are a LOT of wheels out there available for 650 a set.

    • Yes it can be a challenge for obvious reasons. Remember when people were blocked on websites during the last administration if you didn’t agree. Being retired I can scan all the sites and podcasts. I start in the morning with Glen beck during my walk. Then I watch Orielly that I recorded the night before. I scan the headlines on Newsmax, and News Nation. News Nation has Como so it’s diverse. Weekly him and Orielly have debates sometimes Steven A is along for the ride. My nightcap is Jesse Watters for comic relief. Then it’s the Astros, that’s been disappointing. Sometimes Greg Kelly if the Astros are getting blown out.
    • I believe the only thing that can be monitored is negative electrical current returning through the frame instead of the ground wire. It's just a guess, but that's how your home gfi breakers work and my theory is that is what's going on. I will be watching for what you figure out.
    • Glad it worked for you. I tried that 1st, about 2 years ago. Didn't help. I also tried doing a hard reset (disconnecting battery for minimum of 30 minutes). Worked a couple times, but after one summer of doing it over and over, that no longer worked.  I was fairly confident it was either the compressor or a failed actuator, but I just couldn't identify which one. Had to research which actuators do what and which last numbers are associated with each.
    • Took me FIFTEEN MINUTES to find this. Isn't that a problem? On the mainstream media I can INSTANTLY find 100 articles bashing President Trump ... but when it comes to TRUTH in American corporate news & search engines, it's carefully filtered to support ONE SIDE. A Republic cannot survive like this! Incredible! Even all the AI searchers out there failed as well! ChatGPT said it needed more details on the video that I provided a DIRECT LINK to! I thought AI was the be-all, end-all?? I had to dig it up myself. This should be FRONT PAGE NEWS!!! 🤬   Here's the statement directly from our President:     Glenn Beck's reporting on the operation:   https://glennbeck.com/watch/videos/trump-just-revealed-a-massive-military-secret-that-lowered-gas-prices   In case that link doesn't work, here's the YouTube link:     And another 15 minutes to find this clip out of Glenn Beck's video - the first few seconds is all the corporate media will allow the public to see, since the low IQ people will think Trump said " I love inflation ", and that was the end of it. Taken WAY out of context! Here's that part, plus the 2nd part about the oil smuggling operation:
    • More is cylinder deactivation. Kia-Hyundai Ive had 4. The warranty is the same 10 years 100K miles. My grandson drives the first one 05 Elantra GT. My wife drives the second one 2011 Genesis. The Genesis still performs as new and looks great. The Elantra looks rough. He’s not kind to it. The third was a Genesis coup. The fourth was a Santa Fe. Those were my daily drivers. I don’t keep them long. Kia is the same as Hyundai with the same warranty. I looked at the K-4 today. Too small, otherwise pretty good buy. Most of Hyundai and Kia’s have a performance upgrade.
