when do i need to do this and does anyone have the the part number? and wheres the best place to get the filter?

Yes.  Allison recommends changing the filter at or before 5,000 miles.

 

There are two part numbers available,  29537268, and the one that supercedes it. Unfortunately, I do not have the number for the newest filter. If  you go thru an Allison distributer/dealer, they should be able to help you out. Don't fret- if they can only get the  29537268 part number, it'll work just fine.

 

Go to-  Allison Dealer Locator, enter your location info, and you should find a dealer close to you. Provide them with the part number above, and they should be able to get it.

ok thanks they told me at the dealership that you service it at 25k or 50k if your not hauling much. never told me that spin on filter needed to be changed. anyway i have 5200 on mines i will get it done today if i can find someone to change if not im going to the car wash and do it my self.. man its cold out side hope i can find someone to do it...

You can change it yourself, it's quite easy, and will only take about 5 minutes. Just spin the old one off, clean up the magnet that was on the old filter, put it on the new filter, and install it. Follow the directions on the filter for tightening. IIRC, you turn it one revolution from gasket contact....

 

You'll lose about a pint of fluid.

Thanks to help from SoMnDMax I have the address of an Allison dealer in my area.  Chevy dealership cost for this filter is $35 (just bought one) am told it can be purchased from an Allison dealer for much less.
