Muffler Rusted Through

Well, I am so glad that my truck sticker says that I have stainless steel exhaust. Today I discovered that there is a 1/4 inch hole in the muffler and water was pouring out of it when I started the truck.

 

Is this covered under warranty?

Are you sure that's a rust hole, and not the drain that is supposed to be there? They have a drain hole to allow the water to run out, or it would rust in a hurry. Water is a normal by-product of hydrocarbon combustion, and stainless steel is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof..

 

If it is rusted through, it's probably because you do a lot of short-trip driving. 7500 miles in 3 years makes me suspect that it rarely gets hot enough to dry out completely. But if it's rusted in only 3 years, I would definitely try to get them warranty it. The worst they can say is "no".

I put over 30k miles on my car last year. The truck just does not get driven too much.

 

Are you saying that there is a weep hole in the muffler? It is not on the bottom, but on the back vertical wall of the muffler near the bottom. Is it supposed to be there? I never noticed it before and there is a darkly stained metal around the hole, which looks like rust-through to me.

I can feel exhaust gases come out of the hole when the engine is idling.

Man, I've stacked 42000 miles on my company car Explorer since last November. Even my Sierra has 9500 miles on it.

Yep,Serious as a heart attack.

They do have weep holes for drainage of condensation,Even all the CORSA system mufflers have weep holes in them.

Yes, they have been putting them in mufflers for many years now.
