danno5069 Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I have a 05 sierra z71 with 80000 kms, is it normal to feel or hear a hum when 4x4 and auto 4x4 are engaged. I can feel it thru steering wheel and on floor, almost like a gear to gear feel

I beleive it is either the carrier bearings or it is gear whine. Not really sure but I have driven many other trucks the same as ours and most do not have this noise.

If it is gear whine is it covered under warranty? thnx.
seadoons Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Mine makes noise and has since the day I bought it brand new. 120,000 miles later and everything still works just fine. It is normal.
Crazy Canuck Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 My Mom has an Envoy that had a whine while in 4x4, turned out to be the bearings in the Transfer Case - $1,200 to fix. My Sierra does not make a sound in 4wd. Crazy
csheatz Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I think mine hum's also, not really sure if its the 4x4 or the crap on the road i am driving thorugh! I am going to check when i leave for lunch in 20 min!
J-man67 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 It is not normal. It could be the carrier bearing or an incorrect back lash. If you are within your warranty, I would have it check out.
05silvycrew Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 mine's made that noise/feeling ever since I've owned it (at 50,000 miles). I've taken it to the dealer 3 times and every time they claim it's the normal sound of the gears turning. I've got nearly 80,000 miles on it now and nothing has blown yet....but I get a bad feeling every time I put it in 4X4
