Overheating Issue

my truck has overheated quite a few times in the last month. I have taken it to the dealer and they are telling me there's nothing wrong with it (as it never happens for them).

 

If I start the truck in the driveway and let it run, the engine will overheat but there is no heat in the cab. I believe that if the thermostat is stuck shut, then I would still get heat in the cab? Am i correct?

 

Finally, how hot is TOO hot? I actually got a warning on the dash once while driving in traffic saying coolant too hot. The other couple of times it has been a stroke or two below the red line when I caught it (around 250 or so). Should I worry about engine problems due to this much heat?

I'd go and replace the thermostat, an easy fix to see if that does the trick.

 

As for blowing hot air. I would say it should. If when it's overheating the hvac system isn't blowing hot air then it sounds like some isn't allowing the coolant to flow properly.

 

It's hard to say how much heat is too much and if damage has been done or not. Over heating can do damage. But only time will tell if any damage has been done.

250 is way too hot....if you are not towing...anything over 200-210 is way too much....I would replace the thermostat...then see how it is....i would drive around the dealer, so if it over heats you just pull right in for them to see. Best of luck!!!....this should be a easy fix (finger crossed)

250 is way too hot even if you are towing. That's danger zone stuff. I'd replace the thermostat immediately and see if there is any improvement. Ultra high temperatures can cause serious damage.

 

I'd also suggest confirming that it is actually getting that hot. Maybe the gage is not reading correctly?

If the cooling system on modern vehicles is working correctly 250F sets the SES light and 260F is red line. Assuming the cooling system isnt working correctly i would reccomend a flush of the system with a new 195F thermostat and to be safe change the engine oil since it overheated.

I just noticed that your from Canada, have you checked the A/F for the mix you maybe freezing coolant.
