What Is This Called And What Function Does It Serve?

I have had my truck since 2003, and every once in awhile I notice that there is this piece on the driver side of the rear-AC controls that I have no clue what it does. I am including two pictures and hope someone knows what it is and what purpose it serves. I was thinking microphone, but that is in the headliner above the driver's seat. Maybe some type of thermometer for internal cabin temperature. Any help would be appreciated, its not crucial, but I just felt I should know what it is doing there.

Thanks In Advance,

Mike

Looks like a cell phone mic from an aftermarket install kit.

Could it be from the OnStar that came with the truck? I thought that the mic above the driver seat was for that.

I bought the truck direct from the dealer with 3.1 miles on it and have not had any other aftermarket installs done

on it.

If I am not mistaken it is the Mic for Onstar System.

I'd bet on Onstar.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. I did have the cell phone feature on the truck, but wasn't paying the $0.40/minute they wanted

to make a call. Just seemed odd to me that they would not use the same microphone for OnStar and the Cell phone that comes with OnStar,

but I guess they are two separate systems.

Isn't that the thing-a-ma-bob that makes the thing-a-ma-jig work?

No, you flipped them around. How can you work a thing-a-ma-jig with a thing-a-ma-bob?? I thought this was common sense

Naa the thing-a ma-bob makes the doo-hickey work. The thing-a-ma-jig is tied into the watcha-ma-call it. Mythbusters confirmed this.

But really it looks like a after market cell mic. its not factory though.

Onstar Mic.

The thing above your head is the fan that sucks in air to determine cabin temp for the auto-climate thing-a-ma-jig.

I have the identical thing in the identical place on my truck so I have to think it has to do with the ONSTAR or the Phone feature linked with ONSTAR. I do think it is factory though as it is too similar to mine.
