svensk Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I'm in the market for a new digital camera, I would LOVE an SLR but it aint going to happen. Budget is $390 at the max, pref. something closer to $350 at the most. Another reason for no SLR is the wife needs to be able to use it... It has to be able to "turn on, point, and shoot" for her. She loves taking pics of our little one, and our current camera is waaay too slow at getting pics of him. You hope he stays still for 13 seconds while you hold down the shoot button and patiently wait for the damn thing to take. Leading my list is the Canon powershot 10MP Looks like it has more customizable settings for when I use it, yet can still be point and shoot. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218012527719 Nikon coolpix 10.1 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1205537513525 Sony 9.1 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1202650703335
geektoad Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Since, according to your title, you're too lazy to research, i though i'd help you out and do some research for you. After a couple hours of looking around, i've found it. The perfect camera for your needs.
Black02Silverado Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I know you said your budget is around $350 but if you could consider moving it up some. The Nikon D40 would really be a great buy. My wife just got the D60 and loves it. Takes up to 3 pictures a second, very easy to use. She got it at Wolf Camera. Buying it at a store as to online you can take it in for cleanings and repairs and not have to send it away. Just a thought. That extra cost will be well spent, can you really put a price on family pictures especially of the kids growing up? Here is a site to look at it. Ritz camera is part of Wolf Camera and located nation wide.
Wingnut Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Buy a used one off of Craigslist. There are some SMOKIN' deals on year or two old cameras on there.

My sister in-law actually just got it for Christmas, and I got a chance to play with it a little bit I was really impressed. Very easy to use, snaps photos quick, when you turn to a feature the camera tells you what it does (great for your wife), and it comes with a remote that you can zoom and change shutter speed. Only downfall is you have to use their memory stick, not a big deal if you don't already have 10 SD cards like we do.

There are some sweet deals on the D40. Even though it is the entry level DSLR from Nikon it offers a LOT! D40 and D60 won't work with older Nikon lenses though... just lettin ya know. If you want a cheap and good for the money deal from hell... get the Canon PowerShot A590 IS. Great shots. 8.0 MP. and 109.00 at Newegg.com - LOTS of camera for the money and you save a bundle. Add a 2 gig card and you are off taking great pics for next to nothing. You will not be disappointed and you can save up for a D80 or other DSLR in the future. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...Inc.-_-30120256

You're going to have a very hard time fixing that problem even with the top of the line point and shoots. I've yet to see one that can even come close to a DSLR in the delay from hitting the button to the shot being taken. When it was about 6 months after our first child was born that i finally pulled the trigger on a DSLR, and it was for exactly that reason. I had a Nikon Coolpix 5700 (their top P&S at the time) and i had a lot of pictures of my daughter's ear as she turned away from the shot. It's not an issue at all any more with the DSLR...you push the button, the picture is taken. blam. If you can afford it, i highly recommend looking at the Nikon D40 or the Canon XS. They're pretty cheap, and great cameras. And as far as the "wife-useable" aspect...they do have a full-auto mode so that she can use it just like a point and shoot.
VMax2007 Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I suggest PM'ing Rich (MS3Dale), I hear he is the resident expert on digital cameras.
Bowtie2Sierra Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 For what it's worth, my wife won a Nikon D40 at work this week during their annual Christmas raffle. I am an idiot when it comes to photography and cameras but I have found the D40 to be very easy to use so far. After playing around with it the last day or so and just scratching the surface of what this camera can do, I have a feeling that this thing is going get photography added to my list of hobbies...hell, I might even decide to learn photoshop now.
MarkD Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I'd stick with a Canon in the price you are looking for. Simple Point and shoot, small size, SD media I have a larger Canon as well, but the convenience of a shirt pocket cannot be overstated. For a D-SLR, Nikon is the way to go.

Like Wingnut says, look on craigslist for a used DSLR in good condition. I've had my Canon XS for about a day, and I've actually found it to be a lot easier to use than my old point and shoot. The full auto mode works just like the point and shoot did, but like Karl said, there's virtually zero lag from when you press the shutter button to when the picture is taken. It is absolutely worth the extra money. The Nikon D40 is available for $410 on amazon, and the XS is $470. http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-18-55m...3810&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-10-1MP-Digital...7958&sr=1-1
svensk Posted December 26, 2008 Author Posted December 26, 2008 Thanks guys...Now I REALLY want an SLR.
svensk Posted December 26, 2008 Author Posted December 26, 2008 OK...I think I'm sold on the D40. Ritz Camera has a sale on them going right now for 449.00. I'll probably go pick it up tomorrow after I go and play with the demo model. I think if I don't, I will regret just getting another point and shoot that doesn't do the job intended.
