Getting A Lift, Silly Tire Question

So I'm pretty set on getting a Rancho 4" lift for my '07 as soon as the tax return rolls in. I want to keep my stock 17" rims as I like the factory look on the truck. I currently have 285/70/17 Cooper Discoverer STT tires on the truck (33"). I'm thinking they might look a little small once I'm 4" higher, so I'm considering some slightly larger tires, something in the 305/70/17 range. Here is my question. Most if not all 305/70/17 tires I've seen say "Rim Width: 8.5 to 11". Now, I believe my stock rims are 17x8.

 

Can tires with a rim-width range of 8.5 to 11 be safely installed on a 17x8 rim....or do I need different, wider rims?

i have a 6'' lift with mine with 33's and it looks good at lest i think. it should look ok with the 4'' for the tire question i dunno

My opinion is that you can safely mount them on 8" wheels. The steering response will be less than if they were mounted on...say 10" wheels. The tread/sidewall stability is lessened by mounting on a narrow rim as opposed to a wider rim. This affects the steering response and wandering tendencies of the tire. It's pretty close, so I think you should try it. If you feel you don't like the characteristics, change the wheels.

You will be fine with the stock wheel width. I think 33's will look fine on a 4" lift.

You will be fine, some tire shops will not install over sized tires on stock rims, dam laywers. I would not skimp on the ply of the tire though.
