Alternator Toast?

so my 05 ext cab sits mostly unused for a week in sub freezing temps while i enjoy hawii. driving home from the airport i notice the gauge for the charging system seems high (prolly around 15 volts or so) all the way home 120 miles. Get it checked out at napa and they tell me the alternator or voltage regulator is on the way out. under load the meter is showing about 14.8-15 volts. What gives? just doesn't seem right the 145 should take a dump so early with only 52k on the odometer. normally i would just shake this off but my hoses for the trans cooler are leaking to the point of needing replacement. this is gonna be a hefty bill.......

If it keeps running at 15 volts, it is gonna fry your battery by constantly overcharging it.

If the new alternators are like older ones...the voltage regulator is inside and held in place with a couple of small screws. After getting the alternator off of the truck, it is fairly easy to replace the voltage regulator. At the same time, you can replace the brushes ..(if needed)

Probably 20 or 25 bucks for the regulator if you do it yourself.

If you want it totally redone, I would recommend finding a local place that rebuilds starters and alternators. probably less than a 100 bucks.

That way you can get it completely redone and have quality parts in it vs a cheap China rebuilt one from the parts store that may or may not last.

Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like something has taken out the regulator. It is unusual at that low mileage but given the harsh environment that these parts live, in it does happen sometimes.

A brand new alternator typically charges at about 14.7 volts in my experience.

maybe you should get one of these setups:

:D:lol:

Damn, you could probably run a small town on this setup.

or let it go to waste...I find this setup quite appealing though...i guess simply having that much power on tap is kinda like having the most towing capacity...you can never have too much

well texas jim i decided to go your route. on my way home from work i dropped it off at my dealer. they are gonna pull off the alternator and bring it to a local guy to rebuild the alternator and replace the regulator. i figured even though its probably the alternator i might as well get new brushes and bearings while it is off. sounds like he is gonna charge me $130 bucks for everything since he said i have the largest alternator offered by gm? anyways, while that is getting taken care of they are putting on the new transmission cooler line hoses....thanks dudebros

At least you know it will be right that way. Being able to trust the repair is worth a little extra $$$.

that setup is super cool, if i still ran big stereos that would definately be an option for me. now here is one for you guys.............just got off the phone with my service manager and he advises me that their is nothing wrong with my alternator/regulator setup. he went on to explain that their was a TSB in july '08 addressing this exact problem of overcharging on the "new style" alternators. you guys aware what this one will be? he said he would give me the info and explain further when i pick the truck up. man i love the idea of not having to spend more money!

Probably need a 6.2 just to turn all those.

Thats good.

You are lucky.

Sounds like you found an honest man.

They seem to be few and far between these days. :D

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
