Rim Question. Need Advise...

Alright guys, I am new to this forum obviously, but I am looking into putting a leveling kit on my 05' Silverado since i am too much of a tight azz to buy a suspension lift. Like i said, my truck is an 05' Z71 LT package. My question is, it comes stock with 17" rims, can i put a 16" rim on it? My buddy has a 04' Z71 and he said his spare tire is a 16, but his reg wheels are 17's. Mine however still has a 17" spare with the truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope, 05+ trucks have larger front discs that require 17"+ wheels to clear the calipers.

Welcome to the site!

thanks for the help. what kind of leveling kit do you reccomend? I have been looking at rough country, but i hear that there is a leveling kit that will put me up about 2.5, instead of 2''. Also, i have been looking at the Dick Cepek DC 1's anywhere where they sell em at a reasonable price?

Jeff,

Did they put even larger disks on the 05 1500 than my 99 2500? It has 16"s.

Evidently.

Actually, they may be bigger in dia, but I am betting your HD has a larger swept area.

I have the Truxxx Level-Lift 2-1/2" front with a 1" taller block in the rear. The Truxxx kits are spendier, but I am happy with mine.

Jeff, he's got an '05, so the Truxxxxx kit will just be re-indexed keys and will be just like any other leveling kit.

To the original poster: If you want to level your truck, I would highly advise against going with a leveling kit. All they are, are keys that re-index the torsion bars to achieve 'lift' (it isn't really lift, it's is just making the front suspension droop further down within the stock range of travel). You can achieve the same thing just by adjusting the torsion bar adjustment bolts. Will it net 2"-2.5"? No, but there's a good reason for that. If you crank at all, you ride will get stiffer, and if you go over about 1.5", it will start to really get bad, because the suspension will be forced so far down within its range of travel that it will not be able to droop when you hit a bump. The upper control arm will just drop down and hit the droop-stop, and since the wheels didn't drop down, the whole truck will have to.

That's not the main reason though. If you go over 1.5", this will put your suspension at such extreme angles that not only will it ride terribly, but you will be wearing through suspension and steering components much faster than needed. Parts like upper and lower ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm, and inner and outer tie rod ends will all have accelerated wear, and if one of those parts fails, you're pretty much screwed.

And the suspension geometry on the GMT900s is different, which is why they can seemingly handle levling kits over 1.5".

Dan, its times like this you make me proud.

To the OP, if you want some bigger tires and a level truck get a 2 or 3 inch body lift and crank your stock keys 1". Don't forget to get an alignment

Trust me...... Been there/done that

Maybe not AS stupid as you looked.... But since you look pretty damned stupid that's not saying much for your intelligence [insert funny smiley here]
