Hey guys I just installed my Airaid MIT Intake tube. The instructions said to disconnect the negative battery cable. I didnt do this because i was lazy, and i assumed it was on there just for safety reasons. However ive been thinking.. should i disconnect the battery and reconnect it so my engine computer can "learn" then new mod?

There are two schools of thought on this, both with good points. Personally, I would do it (leave it disconnected for at least 30 minutes). It won't hurt anything, although honestly, I don't think it will do much either.

So how long should i leave it disconnected?

do i disconnect the negative cable or the positive cable or both??

Just disconnect the negative terminal for at least 10 minutes.

I would leave it unhooked for at least 30 minutes just to be on the safe side. Another option is to disconnect the negative terminal and touch it against the positive one. This will create a short that will clear everything immediately. I know it sounds a bit "dangerous" but I can promise you that it's safe and that it works. Just do this quickly and hook the negative terminal back up. Voila, you're all set!

anybody else agree with bostonsfavson? this sounds like i will blow something if i do this....

It's a fairly common technique, and I've personally done it for years on many different vehicles without issue. I wouldn't have you try something that could harm your truck

FWIW, this technique is also used by Butch, who is the admin over on DenaliTrucks.com and one of the most knowledgeable car guys I know.

I'm not sure I would touch the negative to the positive while it's still connected to the battery. I've heard of touching the two together when they are both disconnected to discharge everything.

If you are going to touch them together...TAKE THEM BOTH OFF OF THE BATTERY.

Touching them together...when disconnected from the battery will discharge the capacitors that store and hold power.

It can sometimes (but not always) be beneficial.

The PCM is in a learning state all the time so disconnecting the battery will just make drivability feel odd for about 100miles. All the MFR of the air intake wants to do is make you feel like you felt like there was an improvement.
