What Sort Of Strange Cars Have You Had?

Most of you are aware that our second car is a Scion xB. What you may not be aware of it that the habit of buying strange cars for us goes WAY back. Our first new car was a 1979 Subaru Brat. (Yup it had a camper shell and some wheels on it AND it was red). Over the years there were 3 more Brats (81, 82 & 86), a Subaru 4x4 wagon, A Renault Dauphine, Vauxhall 300, a 383V8 S10 Blazer, a 66 VW Beetle with a 2180cc dual weber beast of an engine, A few old Jaguars (XK120 and E type), 49 MGTD, Zebra striped 59 Cadillac convertible, 79 Ferrari 308 GTB, and an 81 Ferarri 308 GTsi... I have pictures of most of them but I won't bore you with all of them...

1976 Chevette, 1980 Pinto.

The rest of my cars were cool. 1971 Cutlass Supreme, 1972 Buick Skylark, 1979 Mustang, 1978 Monte Carlo, 1983 Buick Regal, 1978 Olds Delta 88 (winter beater).

Then I went to trucks in 1990 and never looked back.

I had a '65 and it was black. This was in 1976. 5 engines later, I got a real car.

Trucks have pretty much had my attention the last 15 years too. We still sneak an odd one in every once in a while!

Being in the car business (or related) since 1980 has obviously afforded me the opportunity to find interesting stuff that many would not have the time to hunt. It's been fun. You'd be amazed where we went in those Subaru Brats!

Had a '70 Super Beetle back in the mid-70s, sold it to my sister in San Diego who parked it close to the beach, and it basically just "rusted" away, probably had over 150k on it...

Remember, Herbie from "Love Bug" fame, well, my sister called it "Herpies" cuz it was a 2 tone rust and green...

Then had a bit cooler car back in late high school and college, a '73 Chevelle Laguna Coupe with the std 350 engine block.. others include '86 Dodge Lancer, '86 Buick Park Avenue, and '81 El Camino. Since about 1993, I've driven trucks only...

I've only owned trucks till recently, and then the only exception is the Impala...

But I would take a Brat in a heartbeat! Get one with the seats in the bed...awesome!

'61 Corvair..fun to drive,every time I would speedshift the one fan belt jumped off the cooling fan

'73 Vega GT Kamback..gutless engine..handled pretty good

That's why I like you Jeff, you've got balls! Anybody that would admit to driving a Pinto or Chevette is a badass!

Out of the many, many cars/trucks I have had, I would say the 1988 Mazda RX7 Turbo II, and the 1992 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe (supercharged) were probably the strangest.

These came after my Mustangs in my teens, my first being a 1964.5 at age 15.

1971 Chevy Nova, it was the ugliest yellow with the green interior. Original color was that greenish looking shit, but the yellow did me in. I couldn't even keep the thing more than about 8 months.

1969 Camaro, base model, nothing on the car was original. 327, 0.090 over, turbo 350. Car would fly, but you could lift up the floor mats and see the pavement. Still miss that old rust bucket.

You may ask why these cars qualify as strange. Well I must have been drinking too much when I bought them to think I could fully restore them and have a nice piece afterwards.

I guess strange should be whatever people want it to be. I've had some rather weird and exotic cars... I never paid big $$$ for them though. I always hunted a deal.

Well... they look really dated NOW but that was back in the 80s! I had that bug in 1984. Sold it to a guy who took it to Italy of all places. The car came from Europe and then ended up back there.

Those Ferraris were big time fun. The 1979 had 4 down draft webers and just screamed when you got on it. By todays' standards it wasn't blinding fast but it was fun. The Italians know how to make music out of an engine.
