10 That Sank The Auto Industry

I bet Rick Newman lives in New York and takes the subway to work. He certainly should not be writing about the car business!

I read that earlier and I disagree with some of those.

+1 I think most of it is BS, but I thought you all might be entertained.

Typical leftist trash, most of those vehicles were huge money makers for the companies yet Detroit was supposed to have the ingenious vision to halt production and radically change models during peak sales? Someone give this guy a clue.

There may be bits of truth in there, but to me, it reads like the standard reportings of the japanese auto fanboys. Go Prius!!

I agree with the Taurus. It was a breakthrough car...but Ford let it rot on the vine...like they did with a lot of their money makers.

The Ranger, Explorer, Taurus, Escort, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car, Windstar, etc. All class leading products when new...and within a couple of years, they were at the bottom of their class. And rather than sink a few dollars to update a lot of those models, they canceled them (Escort, Windstar, Taurus) in favor of completely new models (Focus, Freestar, Fusion)

There was some truth in that article. They way I took it, was that despite the particular vehicle or the particular brand, the Big 3 sat back and waited for the vehicle to run their course, without much long term vision. I think that is the case in most everything, the don’t fix what isn’t broken mentality. Could they all have done a better job looking to the future? Sure, the past is the past and we need acknowledge that so that perhaps we don’t make the same mistakes again.

I really don't think that article is that far off base.

There's a lot of truth to it, and I think a lot of it is pretty interesting to think about, especially how Detroit has FOLLOWED a lot of the trends, and therefor, always been a step behind on things like sedans and economy cars. Boring is definitely a good way to describe a good percentage of american sedans, especially prior to 2000.

I agree somewhat with it, but do with the author would remove his lips from Toyota's ass. The Explorer, Taurus, Cavaliar, Astro were once all good cars, but they let them linger too long and ran them into the ground. However talking about GM not being competitive by only haveing a truck based minivan is stupid, he must not remember the U-body vans. I don't think the Prius should be here at all, he just wanted one last suck on the tit of Toyota.
