Some of you may remember last year when I posted the pics of our delivery guy's 424000 mile plus 99 GMC Sierra.

 

Well it finally coughed up a lung! After 451350 miles and almost 10 years of service, the Sierra finally has a new 5.3 engine. The old one started making some rather un-natural top end valvetrain noises and we were sure it wasn't going to get better. It still ran fine and probably could have been fixed but after that many miles, it was time to install a new bullet.

 

Cheers GM for building such a great engine. I remember when the first new series V8s came out, all of the GM faithful were threatening to fall on the sword because the venerable old 350 was gone. Looks like GM didn't do too bad huh?

what was that? 120-150 miles a day? (Average). I dont even do 100 miles a month at times. I guess that is a testament of how strong that little V8 was.

Chuck says he changed the oil every other month or so. He estimates between 6500 and 8500 miles depending on how busy his service was. He wasn't exactly one of these guys that does it on the side of the road if they hit their mileage mark. It got done in due time and he only ran Havoline dino oil in it. I do not know about the transmission. I'll ask him next time I see him. I do know that the rest of the truck is mostly original but it has been through a few fuel pumps and front hubs.
