punmax Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 So guys I got my truck (NBS Escalade) and the engine bay got really dirty. Is it safe cleaning it with a degreaser/water (no pressure?)
bigredmariner Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Shouldn't hurt, I've done it like that before with no probs. Can't be much different from driving in the rain.
Zembonez Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I wash mine at the car-wash using the high pressure rinse cycle at least 3 or 4 times a year. Always have. Never a problem.
grumpysgmc Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Just use a cloth and do it by hand That's how I do mine. Usually just use an old chamois and rinse it out a few times. Not really greasy dirty, just dusty dirty and doesn't take long.
punmax Posted May 14, 2009 Author Posted May 14, 2009 I used a wet cloth to clean my Silverados engine bay, but on the Escalade there's actual dirt/salt in very hard to reach areas..

Never a problem. +1 I have done this many times. Never a problem. Usually after cleaning it once or twice then I can keep it detailed with just a cloth.
2005LT Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I wait till summer to do this so I can control the pressure: I have a gas powered pressure washer and the first step I do is apply soap to the whole engine bay on very low pressure. Let it sit for a few minutes to loosen any grease or dirt. Then with the pressure washer engine on a low speed, I wash the bay out with medium-low pressure to remove the soap and dirt. Cleans up pretty nice this way. Using a sponge you could wipe some areas clean after soaping too if necessary.

ukrkoz Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 dude, i have just pressure washed 91 civic engine. without any adverse effects. i can not even imagine how old has engine to be, to suffer from this. they have all those nice little silicone seals everywhere. for what it is, you can drive in water, as far as exhaust and air intake are not submerged. you ever saw Top Gear episode, when they had older cars, like mid 80s, i think, FILLED WITH WATER, and they started and drove no problems. so, go for tire cleaner and pressure washer at any car wash station. cans of engine cleaner you buy at parts store will clean maybe 1/4th of what you need to do. you can bring ramps along to station, get her on them, do engine and undercarriage same time.
