98 6.5 Stall

I have a 98 3500 w/6.5 that stalls first thing in the morning after about 15 min and restarts immediately then runs about 5 mins and stalls again. When you restart, it will run all day. ANY help will be GREAT.

Have you got your PMD relocated ?

 

If not i'm guessing the PMD is shut and you have to get a new one and have it relocated, either in the front bumper or just somewhere it doesn't get hot...

 

This is a common issue with the "Detroit" 6.5 TD

Don't just buy the PMD and replace it on the same location, get it relocated where it will get some cooling, this is the brain for your fuel pump, and it is a known problem that they burn out and act exactly as you describe...

 

You could actually just cut apart the connector from the PMD and relocate it by yourself, and then lengthen the wires and solder them together, but if you think you're not up to it just buy the relocation kit ;)

Does this condition ONLY stall the engine, or can it cause other symptoms? My '97 K3500 (bone stock) will run fine all day: starting, stopping, idling, A/C or heat, cruising, rain or shine... But on VERY rare occasions, it seems to slip into N and then stall. Sometimes, immediately after the stall, it seems to have no battery power to light the plugs or spin the starter (as I'm coasting along the shoulder) but the radio stays on. Then it'll restart, but the trans seems to be locked in 2nd. No DTCs; battery terminals are clean & tight; batteries are ~2y.o.; no other problems. When it runs, it runs like new, and that's 99% of the time.
