Metallic Grinding Noise When Turning Left

Recommended Posts

Had the truck at the local mechanic this morning for what I thought was the front pad wear sensor making noise. He said the pads had 70% of the material left. This noise I'm hearing is intermittent and I can only describe it as a metallic scrapping sound. I have ~58K miles. It does it more frequently on left turns. I can only guess this is a wheel bearing from what I've read. I've never actually had a bad wheel bearing so I don't know what they sound like. This is a 2 wheel drive truck. How difficult are they to replace? I assume there are 2 per side? Thanks..

Well.... I had both front wheel bearings/hubs replaced this morning. $320 for the parts and $180 for labor. The noise is still there.:lol::cry: The mechanic is totally stumped and so am I. Maybe it's a warped rotor. The only thing left is to do a complete front brake job with new rotors and pads. Anyone have any suggestions?

Steering shaft?? A loud growl, sounds like metal to metal?? Mine does it too, and it is the steering shaft on my truck.

It's definately a metallic scrapping sound, similar to worn brakes. I think the next place to inspect is the e-brake shoes.

Check the steering shaft - go try it.

Check the steering shaft - go try it. Unless you are driving with the e-brake on, it should not growl. The steering shaft does that when you crank the wheel, mine does it too. But @ $400, it will do it for a while before I replace it.

Check the INSIDE pads. I just posted on another thread about noise/grinding starting at 55k and I thought it was the hubs since my pads looked GREAT. Well, today I had serious grinding when applying the brakes. Pulled of the front wheels and, sure enough, the pads looked great again. Checked the inside pads this time and there was nothing left - metal to metal.

is the wheel rubbing against a brake line or something like that? could also be power steering related, think about things that are affected by turning the wheel?

Don't know if you have rear disk brakes but my 01 Tahoe started to do the same thing. Turns out the backing plates were rusting and expanding to come into contact with the rotor during certain turns. Took me a long time to figure it out but it went away permanently after I replaced the backing plates. About $30 each and you have to pull the axles to install. I also did axle seals while I was in there.
