Quickie: Yr/model; oil you you use, and how often do you change it...

Just wondering. GM told me every 5000 miles, but that doesn't sit right with me. I haven't had a second oil change yet (guy I bought it from never drove it, had 8 vehicles) but should be soon.

08/silverado/I switched to castrol gtx 5w-30 from factory oil/ 10,000 extended guard oil filter/plan to change every 3K miles.....

Before I go on, why do they say 5000 miles? That doesn't seem right with standard conventional oil.

The 3000 mile oil change is out dated. The jiffy lubes try to perpetuate it because they sell more oil. ILSAC GF API-SM rated oil is very good today. Much better than oils of the past. You won't find a bad name brand oil today.

Your truck has an oil life monitor. GM recommends that you follow it. Or at least go 5000 miles. And use a good filter, AC Delco. Never use a Fram. they have cardboard end-caps. The extended guard is their best filter. I still dont trust them.

2007 Classic HD2500 with 24,000 miles. I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and AC Delco PF48 filter. I change every 3000-3500 miles only because I don't drive it all that far....sits a lot, so I change it about every 4 months or so....changed the coolant (dexcool), rear end oil )castrol 75w90 synthetic) and tranny fluid (pennzoil dexron VI) all at 21,000 miles. Wanted to do it before winter set in and it is right at three years old.

08 Sierra 5.3L, Mobil 1 5W30, K&N Oil Filter, changed every 5000 miles or annually, whatever comes first.

09 Envoy Denali 5.3L, same as the Sierra -- but usually ends up getting changed first. I put more miles on it than I do my truck.

For my previous truck:

2007 GMC Sierra 5.3L Changed oil every 5000 miles. Whatever oil the GM Dealership was using. (regular dyno oil, 5w30) Oil Life monitor usually still had 40% left on it when I changed, but changed it 5000 miles regardless.

For my current truck:

2008 GMC Sierra 2500 Duramax Diesel: Have not had to change the oil yet, but I anticipate changing the oil every 5000 miles, or twice a year. Will use whatever grade the owners manual calls for, (probably Shell Rotella as far as the brand goes) Or I may decide to go off of the Oil Life Monitor. We'll see.

I don't use any fancy shancy Synthetic oil, but if I did and when I used to, Mobil-1 full synthetic was my choice.

09 Sierra 5.3. I use Mobil 1 syn and Purolator gold filter. I just changed my first oil but i usually change every 4000. At the rate i was going the DIC was telling me I would have to change it at 8000 miles.

Every 3000mi. Castrol Syntec 10w30 since new. Either NAPA 1522 or the current GM Filter. 173K on the clock, 40psi on idle and 60 off idle.

My antiques get it every year regardless (unless the 3k rule applies).

Yeah, GM has come up with a computer algorithm that gauges the oil. This never test the oil for contaminates thou. A clean engine has had the oil changed at 3k or less every time. High mileage oil changes make for gunky tear downs (which is usually why it makes it to the tear down bench).

Just my 2 cents.

2009 Sierra Denali.

Haven't owned it long enough to change the oil in it yet but I'll change it around 5k miles.

I'll use Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 filter. Then I'll change it around every 6k to 8k miles depending on the type of driving I do.
