I think that it could be done, two ways, Diesel and smaller displacement highly efficient v6's.

People would just have to accept the fact that they won't have a 400HP V8 under the hood.

Yes I know it can happen with the hybrids,4 bangers, v-6's, etc...; but damnit I want my gas guzzling, high horse power V8. Let me keep my performance and get 30 mpg, that's right I want my cake and eat it to.....

The way I heard it. They are requiring a 35 mpg average by 2016. Depending on the mfgs mix of vehicles, that may be slightly higher or lower. So if 1/3 of your production is 40 mpg economy sedans, other vehicles can use that overage to bring them into compliance.

This is just another way for the Eco-Terrorists to Outlaw ANYTHING with more than 4 Cylinders!

Why does it have to be 4cly? What if they took a low horsepower v8 made it direct injection with a twin turbo. Not only would they increase the HP, but also the mileage.

SC4808 hit the nail on the head...Diesels

Small displacement diesels for all light trucks and cars...screw the Gasser mentality...

Oil burners are where its at...just like europe has been doing for decades.

A friend of mine has a jeep liberty, one of the ones that came with the Mercedes diesel in it....that thing will do a 4Hi burnout half way through a set of lights...and its bone stock, and even honking on it, it gets over 30MPG city.

Give us some diesel power and a 6 speed trans...than you could actually get in 6th more often and stay there longer as you don't need revs to make power...that's where the MPG's are really at.

Heck, I'm already there. Suzuki motorcycle gets 60 MPG, Kawasaki gets 45, GMC gets 17, Toyota truck gets 18, fleet average = 35 MPG. That's if I use them all the same amount. The more I use the bikes, the better it gets!
