A V8 Cummins

An unscientific study that I've undertaken has found that the majority of diesel-powered pickups w/ aftermarket dual exhausts or tractor trailer "stacks" are Dodges. It would seem that these owners love driving a vehicle that sounds like a John Deere tractor.

Do you think if Cummins built a V8 diesel (w/ its different exhaust sound) for Dodge that people would still be modifying their exhausts?

I have heard Fords that are louder, but they don't sound like an agricultural implement. There seem to be very few modded GM diesels around here.

There have been many Cummins V8's....just not in 3/4 or 1 tonne trucks.

V8 diesels, at least in ag applications are notoriously bad on fuel and unreliable. Not to mention not great at making power. Most ag diesels and diesels in tractor units (semis) are of the 6 cylinder variety.

Dodge was going to have a 5.0 liter Cummins V8. It was supposed to launch in 2010 1/2 DS (half ton) pickups. I have all the specs from a 2007 Chrysler Powertrain manual somehwere on my other computer. IIRC it was severely torque managed at around 400 lb-ft. We were scheduled to get a mule for transfer case testing in summer 2008 but it never happened. When the bottom dropped out on the auto industry the V8 Cummins half ton was cancelled as was the LMK Duramax 4.5

The biggest issue is packaging. V8 diesels package better, especially when you want them to fit where a small gas V8 goes. If you look at a Cummins 5.9 on a pallet you'll see how tall and long it is.

Detroit Diesel had alot of success with thier 71 series engines, the V block went from a V-6 all the way up to a V-24. They were very reliable and were used in busses, marine applications, and logging. Too f-ing loud and smokey now.
