I dont even understand it... There should be several catagories... 5.3 w/ knock, 5.3 w/ tick, 5.3 no problems, 4.8 w/ knock, 4.8 w/ tick, 4.8 no problems.... and so on.

Anyways.. my 05 with 11,000 miles makes no such noises... and i run 10-40w dyno pennzoil

I have an '05 2wd crew cab. I just had my first oil change at 3,000 miles. I know, we're all proud here, too! ; )

Anyway, I used Mobile 1 Synthetic and have no such noises. I'll change it again at 6,000 miles. Before it starts, I know that I would probably be safe to go 5,000 miles but I don't have to put many miles on my truck (had it for over 6 months and it just turned 3,000) so I don't mind putting out $35.00 for an oil change twice a year.

99+ 4.8L with knock... but i don't think it's coming from within the engine, sounds low, like around the pan. i use a synthetic. 140,000 miles. just rolled the big 140 this week. Kills me. i've put 120K on this truck myself, very lovingly i might add (very regular with fluids and lube changes).

it pains me to think that I will one day be driving a different truck.... or will I?

I had a 02 silverado 4.8 that started the tick at about 20k, and now my 04 Silverado LS 4.8 started a cladder ticking noise 18k, GM said with the new block it would not do it, my noise is only at idle, never had piston slap.

I have a 5.3 with 50,000 miles, it will knock and tick at the same time, it will only knock or tick at an idle, some times it will tick and no knock and vice a versa.

This post is busted, but here is my thoughts.

These ticks and knocks started at 35,000 miles on the clock. Right around the same time these noises started, I thought it was because of the driveway at our new house we bought, the drive way has a steep incline. I thought I was getting a dry start up but I had great oil pressure as soon a it turned the engine over. Later I found it didn't matter if it was facing up hill, down hill or on flat ground it still made the noises at start up.

I run full synthetic 5w30 and change my oil every 6,000 miles or 6 months. I can't find a rhime or reason as to why it ticks or knocks at start up. The engine can be hot or cold, it doesn't seem to matter.

If I tow our 5,000 Lbs 24' travel trailer or our race car trailer often, it will use a litre of oil by the time I get to the 6,000 miles oil change, if I don't tow anything, it won't use a drop of oil.

I have a buddy that works for GMC and he made mention in either the 03 or 04 year model, GM did something slightly different on the pistons...for lack of better words, basically a cap of some sort that prevented the piston slap.

The problem he spectulated was that after X amount of miles, that piece would wear and the slap would start appearing on these newly designed motors. I wouldn't really call that a fix, so much as a "get past the factory warranty" fix.

On the other hand, it appears the trucks aren't dying from it. But it can be very annoying! Of course, he owns an 04 Tahoe w/ the 5.3 so it isn't bad enough to keep him from owning one.

My own experience, I had an 02 ECSB with the 5.3 and had occassional piston slap.

I have a 99 5.3L and no knocking here. I use Amsoil... Besides this stupid 99 computer (which is about to be gone) My truck runs like a dream..

I have an 02 w/ 5.3 and right after I turned 35K mine started the ticking/knock, I actually thinks its more of a rattle on intial start up but only after sitting all night. It also has a extremely faint tick for a few seconds after start up when warm. I run Mobile 1 10w30 and it doesn't use a drop of oil between services.

My dad's 02 Yukon w/ 5.3 does the same thing. It has 100K on it and has had Mobile 1 in it since its 2nd oil change and rattles so bad on start up you'd think it was gonna come apart, but not a problem one and doesn't use any oil either. I've found that by doing a t-body induction serivce every 20K will keep this at bay, I use BG Products btw. Also he had a 99 GMC w/ 5.3 when they first came out and his had a rattle on start up and the local dealer put in 2 sets of lifters, 2 oil pumps and I can't remember what else and they finally just gave up on it and said it was just an inherent noise to these engines. He put over 90K on it w/out any problems.

Whew!!! Pretty long run for a busted post!

NOthin got mentioned about the 7.4L. I got one (1999 L29 engine), it started ticking at cold weather startups about 50K. Every year it would get a little worse in cold weather, not much in the summer.

This Nov, it turned 102,000, and one cold morning it started to TICK when I started it. TICK like as in bad lifters. Was 3500 into my normal Quaker State oil change, so I put in new oil/filter. NFG. STill TICKED cold, but for a few days it would go away when it heated up to operating temp. After a week, the noise never went away.

One day I pulled the rocker cover on DR side. Checked clearances, they were not tight. When I turned the engine 360 degrees, I had the #3 cyl with about 1/8" clearance. Not good. I figured the valves were sticking. Trying the Mechanic in a Can trick was cheaper than the gaskets, I tried Sea Foam (2 bottles), water (steam), and even 2 bottles of GM upper engine cleaner. It still ticked. I pulled the heads. The valves aren't stuck but the 3 lifters on the front of the engine on the Driver side (#1 I & E, and #3 I) are BUSTED. See picture.

When the lifters are taken apart, there is some really nasty looking hard goo INSIDE the lifters! I am wondering if the mechanic who replaced the intake gaskets @ 60,000 mi may have overdone the gasket sealer and plugged up the lifters? If so, it had to go thru the oil pasages and into the lifters. Pretty good trick.

Check out the carnage at the bottom of this page. I haven't quite figured out how to put a picture in here so you have to go to the web site to see it.

My new 06 1500 ticks a little when cold. After sitting for 2 days, I started it up and got more like a knocking sound which after about 10 seconds turned into a ticking which afetr another 15-20 seconds goes away!

Here I thought i got rid of my diesel.when I traded it for this rig :cheers:

Don't scare me! I have an '06 5.3 1500 too and it is not making any noises yet. How many miles on your truck? I thought that GM fixed the piston slap problem.

Less than 650, I am going to swing by the dealership tomorrow to pick up my plates and will visit the service dept. and set up a appt. Have the itch for exhaust, Nelson tune and a 2/4" drop and suspension upgrades, but will wait to see if this truck is a keeper.

Cheers,

Bryce

My advice is, don't do any mods until you know for sure whether you have an issue with ticking or not. GM will use this as an excuse to blame the noise on the exhaust mod.

I have about 1200 miles on my truck. It is not my daily driver - I only use it for hauling/towing. Even after sitting for four days without starting, it has not made any unusual noises yet.
