I Want More Power

Recommended Posts

Alright-I have a 01 Sierra X-Cab with the 4.8L V8 and 3.42 diff. I want more power. Not super crazy power but something like the 400bhp the Silverado SS gets.

What would I need to do to get around 400bhp. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg either so any ideas would be great.

I pull my boat around sometimes and I have heavy 22" rims too.

send me your ideas.

Well first off. What is your definition of an "arm and a leg"?

While 400hp is not by any means impossible from a 4.8. There are some that are making more than that from 4.8 liters, but it is not going to be cheap. The easiest way to do it is going to be a super charger and a good tune. I dont know if that will get you there without a cam, headers, exhaust.

The silverado ss, by the way only comes from the factory with 330hp from the factory with the 6.0.

Get a custom Tune.

Regear to around 4.10.

Lose the 22's and get some 17's or 18's.

You still are not going to get 400 HP out of the 4.8 unless you put some type of forced induction on it.

i figured a supercharger would be the quickest response. What kind of $$ would I be spending on one of these-for parts?

Also I like my fuel efficiency and my 22's so no gears or small wheels.

The Silverado SS has 345hp & 380ft/pds of torque from the factory.

If you throw a supercharger on, you can kiss at least a good bit of your fuel efficiency goodbye -- most require you to install heavier injectors, and depending on how much boost you run it may require a higher flow fuel pump as well.

As far as parts go, you could be looking anywhere from $3500-5000 depending on the kit you get.

OUCH-I could get a LS2 for that money... What should I expect out of a drivable Cam and heads (internal mods like that)

400 hp from a 4.8, for not much money, good gas mileage? If you're a good fabricator and a good engine tuner, I think it can be done on the cheap. I'm thinking turbocharging. Normally, turbocharging might cost quite a bit to buy a kit that has all the parts, but if you have the skills and equipment, you can make most of it. Then you'll need to be a good tuner of these computer controlled engines.

If you don't have those skills and equipment, I think it'll cost a pretty good chunk of change to get a real 400 hp. Then there's the reliability issues associated with what you end up with. When you're all done, you probably might be better off buying a 6.2 L truck or a 6.0 Vmax or Denali and adding a tune. Ain't no free lunches.

Soooo True..

Maybe 400 is more than I should shoot for. I want a good seat of the pants feel out of my truck and still keep the drive-ability I have now. I'm not looking to build a race truck, I would just like some more power.

I think an engine swap is in order

Thanks. I thought my exact number might be off. I new it was in the low/mid 300 range.

My vote:

It's a 9 year truck. Leave it alone. You can get a custom tune to improve it's driveability and add some power. Save your money for your next truck.
