Are Suv's "trucks"?

On plenty of occasions, I have heard (not just here) people referring to Tahoe's, Yukon's, Escalade's, ect as "trucks". Now, I know that what we call "trucks" should in fact be "pick up trucks", but I also know that SUV's are NOT "trucks". They are "Sport utility vehicles". Completely different things.

 

Now thats just my opinion on the naming... Whats your's?

If it's based on the truck chassis and has a real frame...It's a truck to me.

 

If it's a unibody thingymajobber on some other chassis/suspension...It's a...Something other than a truck.

 

"SUV" is a fairly recent name for them. Nobody ever called a K5 Blazer or my '79 4x4 Suburban "SUV". They called them trucks.

 

That's just my opinion though.

 

A better internet argument could be started with the truck/car quandry of the El Camino.

Below is the portion of the definition pertaining to vehicles according to Websters dictionary. What I get from it, and what seems right to me, is that the term truck is appropriately used when describing a vehicle used to haul things. I suppose people can call their vehicles whatever they want but I don't agree that a vehicle made to predominately carry people is a truck. A short poll here at work seems to say that a bed in the back is a determining feature for those who do not feel that Land Rovers, Jeep Commanders, and the like should be called trucks.

And then you have quirky vehicles such as the Rav4 in my sig pic that were imported from Japan with their rear seats removed which classified them as a truck (thus getting around various safety regulations that trucks didn't have to have at the time such as rear bumpers)...add a rear seat at the port of entry and Presto!! a whatevertheheck it is

 

And how do you classify a Ridgeline? It has a quasi-frame underneath?

 

I am with everyone else. If it has a frame under it, it's probably a truck

I agree. Someone who was totally bored with themselves came up with that name. It is real annoying, IMHO.
