Replacement Key

I bought my '97 Sierra used from a private sale. I'm pretty sure that the key I have for the truck isn't the original key (no plastic piece on the top). I have only been able to use the auxilary mode (turning the key past lock) a few times on the truck, since the key isn't quite an exact fit or so it seems......

 

If I went to a GMC dealer, would they be able to get a new key for me by showing them the old key?

It may be the igniton is getting worn out.

Yes you can but you must bring title and registration along with your drivers license along with the VIN.

I had the exact problem in my 96. I had 2 keys made at the local hardware store. One key did what you described, the second would only start the truck if it was in a certain way..........flip the key over and insert it the ignition switch wouldn't move. I went to a locksmith and had a key made......worked perfect everytime, reguardless of positioning.
