Synthetic Oil

I am going to convert to synthetic on my next oil change. I have heard many different things about how many miles before each change. I know most people change every 3,000 miles with reg oil. How often are you supposed to change the oil with synthetic? Also what weight do you rec using of synthetic for an 01 1500hd 6.0l with 103,xxx miles?

( I am in southen california)

Nothing to worry about. 5w-30 should work just fine. I run mine about 7-9000 miles. Some people may flame me for that but I've never had an issue in more than 10 years of following that schedule. Just make sure your using a good filter like AcDelco or Wix.

In my last truck I used Amsoils Asl 5w-30 that is rated at 25k per oil change and 7k on there oil filter. I changed my filter about every 3-4k and topped off with oil, thats it for one year. Then I dump all of it and start over. I did that for about 80k and never missed a beat.

Now that I have a 8.1L that likes oil, I still do the 3-4K on the filter and just add oil as needed, I will never drop all of the oil in the pan being it takes a quart or two per 3-4k.

Even Amsoils XL oil is rated for 7500k

One other way you can tell how long to run your oil is to have a sample analyzed after your next oil change. Maybe run your synthetic 5k. Do the change and send a sample from that. You'll get a recommendation based on your engine conditions. Standard analysis is $22.50. Contact them and they will send you a sample kit free. Follow directions and mail it back.

I change between 5k - 6k. With what my engine is subjected to, that's about the best time for me to change

Oil/filter change intervals are like socks, underwear and toothpaste.

No rights.

No wrongs.

Just personal preferences.

For me and my house I change about every 5k for dino (Castrol) or synthetic (SuperTech) using SuperTech filters.

My .03 (USD) .033 (CAD)

Trust me on this, you can change your oil at very long intervals if you want, but please, for the sake of all around you, change your chonies before an analysis says you need to. I'm just sayin...there is a wrong when it comes to chonies....

 good call Chuck.

I'm planning to switch to mobil-1 synthetic 5W-30 and change at 5k mile intervals.

I spend a lot of time sitting down as I drive. With the vinyl seats, everything is well contained. Some weeks I'll drive 600+ miles. So 8-9 weeks is not very long at all before the change out. Heck, some people here have admitted that they can go 12 months before they make a change.

But there are some that can't even play a simple game without the need to perform a change.

Why switch now? I just traded in my Bonnie on this truck, and at 207,000 miles she'd pull like a mule. I ran nothing but Dino oil in her.

I also don't know how much truth there is to it, but I've also heard it is not good to switch from Dino to synthetic on a high mileage engine...at least one with a lot of sludge. If you've been diligent about your changes, however, I wouldn't think that'd be a problem.

I changed my truck oil at 1,000 miles, and it will get changed at 5,000 miles and every 5,000 thereafter with Amsoil ASL 5-30 and a Wix filter. I do the 5k intervals because it is very easy for me to remember when to change it...don't even have to write it down.

Thanks for ll the input guys. I have 111,xxx and bought the truck back in December with 93,xxx. I do my (dino) oil changes every 3,000 miles with a Fram filter. I shall try Wix or AC next change. Considering oil changes with synthetic will be more $$ once i convert, i was hoping to get more miles per change but if it saves me more $$ over the long run i'm all for it!

Why is sythetic so much better for my truck anyway? I have always used dino in all my vehicles.
