2001 Sierra 3500 Supposed To Automatically Unlock Doors?

Recommended Posts

Just bought a used 01 Sierra 3500 dually 4x4. Are the doors supposed to automaticlaly unlock? They lock automatically, but don't unlock automatically. Pressing the unlock switch works. I saw a post where someone said in 99 models, they weren't supposed to unlock (haven't been able to verify if this is true) but I know later years did unlock. Anyone with a 01 Sierra who can confirm it's supposed to automatically unlock? Thanks!

I've never had an '01 with power locks, but I had a '00 that locked when I hit a certain speed and did not unlock. On the '02 that I had, they locked when shifted out of park, and unlocked when shifted back into park. I'm assuming they started unlocking automatically in '02.

1990SS: Thanks for that info. I guess they started unlocking in 2001 or 2002. I guess I should just get myself an aftermarket alarm that locks and unlocks.

TXAB: I read that thread, but they discussed the 99. I know they started unlocking some year after 99, but wanted to know what year.

2000 plus is mentioned by MS3DALE in his post. Did you try the procedure he listed for the 2000 model in his post?

Not on the '99s,You must use the TECH2,The 2000-up trucks you can...

#99-08-64-003A: Info - Disabling Automatic (Rolling) Door Lock Feature - (Sep 27, 1999)

Subject: Disabling Automatic (Rolling) Door Lock Feature

Models: 1999-2000 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Models (Silverado and Sierra)

Some owners of the above vehicles may want to have the Automatic (Rolling) Door Lock feature disabled (turned off).

You can disable the Automatic (Rolling) Door Lock feature by either recalibrating the Body Control Module (BCM) or with the self-- programmable function. Use the following procedures:

Model Year 1999 (VIN X)

Important: The feature may be turned off and covered under warranty if the vehicle is under the 3/36 timeframe on a one-time only basis.

*The system can be re-enabled (turned on) again at customer expense*

Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle.

Select Service Programming from the Tech 2 main menu screen.

Identify the vehicle (year, type, fuel system).

Select Request Information (left soft key).

Select Reprogram Existing Module. Verify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Disconnect the Tech 2 from the vehicle.

Connect the Tech 2 to the Techline Terminal. Follow the terminal instructions.

Select Service Programming System from the main menu.

Select Terminal to Tech 2 as the programming method.

Select Program Truck Body Controller.

Select Calibration with Automatic Door Lock Functionality Disabled.

When the action is complete, disconnect the Tech 2 from the terminal.

Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle again.

Select Service Programming from the Tech 2. Complete the vehicle ID.

Select the Program soft key (second from the left). When the Programming Successful screen appears, press the Exit key.

Disconnect the Tech 2.

Road test the vehicle in order to confirm that the recalibration was successful.

Model Year 2000 (VIN Y)

Important: Reprogramming this function for customer preference is not warranty. Please instruct the customers to refer to their Owner's Manual operator instructions or refer to below instructions.

Beginning with the ignition in OFF position, pull back on the turn signal/multifunction lever all the way toward you and hold it while you perform the next step.

Turn your key to ON and OFF twice. Then with the key in OFF position, release the turn signal/multifunction lever. Once you do this, you will hear the lock switch lock and unlock.

You are now ready to program the automatic door locks. Once you release the turn signal/multifunction lever you will have ten seconds to begin programming. If you exceed the ten second limit the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate that you have left the program mode. If this occurs, to continue programming your locks go back to step 1 above.

The following is a list of the available programming options:

• All doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), only driver's door unlocks when key is removed: Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel ONCE, and then the UNLOCK side ONCE.

• All doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), all doors unlock when key is removed: Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel ONCE, and then the UNLOCK side TWICE. (This is the factory setting)

• All doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), none of the doors unlock when key is removed: Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel ONCE, and then the UNLOCK side THREE TIMES.

• No doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), none of the doors unlock when key is removed (Turns off automatic lock feature): Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel TWICE.

You can exit the program mode any time by turning the ignition to ON. The locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate you are leaving the program mode. If the lock/unlock switches are not pressed while in the programming mode, the respective auto lock/unlock setting will not be modified.

I've thought about it a little more and I may be wrong in my previous post. My dad's '99 did not unlock automatically, my '00 unlocked when I pulled the key out of the ignition, and my '02 unlocked when I put it in park. Hard to remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure 2000 and up unlocked automatically like stated above.

TXAB, Thanks for the instructions! Everything went as your instructions said. Unfortunately, still no unlock. Me thinks there's something wrong with me truck. Tried turning OFF lock as well unlock and as expected, it stopped locking and unlocking. So, I know the procedure was done properly. But I program lock and unlock back ON again and it goes back to locking, but not unlocking. Same result whether I use the "unlock driver door only" or the "unlock all doors" options. I wonder what else decides whether or not the doors unlock? Anyway, this is all moot now because I've decided I'm just going to get an alarm that'll do the locking and unlocking. Great information for anyone else wanting to program their locks, though!
