Best Drop In Filter?

Recommended Posts

I have been reading all the posts and notice that lots of people say to get the airaid MIT and a drop in filter. I am totally for that since it is about half the price of a full intake depending on the filter and I agree that the stock airbox will move plenty of air as well as being good and shielded. But my question is which filter is best, i.e.-K&N gauze type, foam, dry flow or oiled? just not sure and wondering if anyone has any reccomendations?

Best?

Best for filtering? Probably a stock paper element. Some internet research will tell you particulate sizes that the various filters will collect.

Best for airflow? A piece of oiled foam. But you can push boulders thru it into the engine.

The K&N is a compromise. I ran one in my 99 for 150,000 or more. It probably flows more than stock and will collect large enough particulates to protect the engine in normal conditions.

I wouldn't run a K&N in my lawnmower, I hate them that much!

Ever notice on the comercials, articles in magazines etc that they never talk about FILTRATION, only airflow?

I have read numerous tests/reviews and they don't increase H/P like most people think they do, people hear the airflow, which does sound a bit meaner than the stock filter so they automatically think they vehicle is quicker. Many Dyno tests have proven "0" % increase in H/P but a 100% chance of increased/premature engine wear. My 2 cents

I have heard good and bad on the K&N myself. Only thing that bothers me really about it is having to oil it because I have heard from a few people that the oil can transfer to the mass air sensor wires. But I guess a can of sensor cleaner will fix that, right? I would be willing to compromse alittle less flow for better filtration, just don't want to get the MIT and then cap it up with a stock fllter. Also, anyone heard anything about the AFE filters? They have what looks to be some pretty decent filters with good flow and filtration.

Ran a K&N on my 00 Silverado and 08 Tahoe. No problems take it out and clean once a yr. Have almost 10K on the Tahoe and had about 40+K on the silverado. Oiling isnt a big deal I oil it and let it sit and "dry out" so its not dripping wet when I put it back.

+1 on the K&N. I put a $50 drop-in filter on and noticed a lot of throttle response, maybe a lil more power from the butt dyno. I have ran a K&N on every vehicle ive owned and have never had an issue with mass airflow sensors

K&N it is! Does anyone have any reccomendations on the cheapest place to get one? Also, do you think there is any real better/worse difference between the airaid gauze filter and the K&N? Only reason I ask is because it seems to be cheaper to buy the airaid MIT and their filter as a package. Unless someone knows some super secret great deal on K&N filters

Yep, best air flow is no filter. Want something that is reusable, and flows, and stops dirt then try Trueflow oiled foam filter. Have used these but like all reusables...PITA and time consuming to service so running on a quality paper filter again.

Just might want to read this first?

Imo, K&N have manipulated/lied to the public into thinking that their filters are the best, they throw big H/P numbers, have cool commercials, advertisements etc that make most young men/teenagers thinking they are the best thing ever and they will turn their grocery getter into an instant muscle machine!

does anyone really buy them for the HP numbers? I didnt I bought it because it is a lifetime filter and cheaper than buying the paper filters once a yr. After 2 times it paid for itself.

I got my second one at Walmart for $45. I dont know if they still have them or not.

To each their own but I like knowing that my motor is staying as clean as possible, not getting the most air.

A guy at an atv forum was telling me how great his K&N filter was, it was so great in fact that he hasn't had to clean it in months!

I said thanks for proofing my point, if it was actually filtering the air like an air filter is suppose to do, then you filter should be filthy dirty, especially running it in an atv!

Funny, he never replied back?

Run what you want, it doesn't matter to me, I was just trying to help the original poster make a somewhat educational guess on what filter to purchase. End of story.

Each time I cleaned my truck filter it was just as dirty as the paper filter ever was. its harder to see it though on the colored filter vs white paper filter. Just watch the water pouring out of it when cleaning. Its filtering something

I have said this before and will say it again, K&N is nothing but over hyped junk. Two friends of mine ran K&N air filters a few years ago and both of them found grit on the inside of the air cleaner housing (after the filter) both of them removed them and went back to the stock AC delco filter and problem solved no mre dirt on the inside, yes they maintained them but both did say it was a PITA to clean let sit to dry and oil them. Just giving you some info on what I have heard from them. I would rather know iam getting good filtration rather then air flow which they claim HP increase but its little to any that you would feal.

I have always ran K&N with no problems, I run it because it is cheaper than buying paper filters. I also ran a K&N on my dirt street stock race car when I raced. I would usually have to clean it every week or every two weeks because it was so dusty and / or muddy depending on how the track was prepped. I have tore down the motor and carb numerous times and there has never been any signs of dirt or damage from dirt, so thats good enough for me.
