6.2l Or 5.3l?

When I was originally shopping the silverado, there were 3 engine choices (that I would consider): 5.3l, 6.0l and 6.2l.

I was pretty set with the middle-of-the road option, and ordering the 6.0L. It runs on regular gasoline, has come guts, and would surely get better fuel economy than the 6.2.

Of course, for 2010 (I'll be ordering mine sometime next spring/summer), the 6.0 is a lost option.

Performance is important to me, especially when cross-shopping the tundra and tacoma (two zippy trucks in their own right). But, fuel economy is a consideration too... I don't want a 8mpg vehicle....

So, I've heard the 5.3L with the 6sp is a great motor. Good git' up and go, and great fuel economy

The 6.2L is likely more on par with the Tundra's 5.7, but it requires premium and doesn't get the tundra's economy figures (as stated by tundra owners).

SOOOOO: What to get? The more economical 5.3? Or the 6.2??? Enlighten me!

That debate will solely be based on whether you do any heavy towing. If you are going to drag a large travel trailer or enclosed car trailer go 6.2L. If you don't do ANY towing or just maybe a once a year tow go with the 5.3L. The 5.3L will tow but won't be up to a heavy haul job the way that 6.2L will. Both trucks can get better fuel economy with a tune from Blackbear. At any rate you get use to fuel mileage what ever it might be. I am used to 10mpg and just do the old 50 bucks at a time thing. whenever I go to gas pump 50 is what I buy. Unless on a long trip then I will fill it.

What kind of gas mileage are Tundra owners getting??

With my HEAVY 33s, im getting 14mpg city and im not going easy on my truck... i also get about 17 on the highway, again not going easy on it.

When my truck was stock id easily see 15 city and 18+ highway

If your an American and love your job buy from an American owned Company. GM or Ford anything else is sending your hard earned money overseas.

nobody buys a truck with a v-8 in it considering gas mileage, any truck with any v-8 is gonna burn gas man, your splitting hairs dude...personally i think thier is no replacement for displacement...

I don't know what kind of mileage you are after, but I know a couple 6.2 CC guys that are getting 18+ consistently highway (with the occasional 20-21) and 15 around town/mix. My best friend has a Tundra and does not get ANY WHERE near those numbers, but he also drives the piss out of it.

If you worried about gas mileage, then don't get a truck. Don't quote me, but I think the 6.2 6 speed with 3:42 is pretty comparable with the 5.3 4 speed and 3:73.

Well the only truck that'll run with the Tundra is the 6.2L 6spd (yes, with 3.42s is a mid 14 second truck). And it gets well better than 8mpg.

So my answer would be the 6.2L

FWIW: The lowerst MPG I saw was 10... and that was towing a 6,000+ boat up the jersey shore in "city" like conditions (stop and go)

It's good to hear you're getting those numbers. I was expecting numbers in the 12s... I've been poking my head in a few Toyota forums, and Tundras are getting about 16-18mpg average. Decent numbers if you ask me... Especially considering there's no electronic fuel saving functions (just a good transmission).

Ehhhh. I'm American, but I'm not stupid. I'll buy the best quality product for my money. If I find the Tundra to be the better truck, than so be it.

Besides, it's not like I'd be funding Japan in total if I bought a Tundra: It's a truck designed in America and built in America.... And I'll be buying it from a dealership in America.... And I'll be getting it serviced in America. Buy the better product, not the American product.

Of course, the Tundra being built and designed in America has its share of issues, which is why I see the Silverado and the Tundra as equals (Both have positives and negatives). If the Tundra didn't have some quality issues, I'd definitely buy it.

Haha... I hear you. I'm not looking for Corolla mileage out of a truck, but in the pickup world I'd like to be fuel-efficient. Honestly, I was shopping for Tacomas at first. I only started looking full-size when I saw that the 5.3 silverado could be had for similar costs (fuel efficiency, price, etc) as the tacoma.

So, I'm trying to get a pickup truck with reasonable fuel economy. Something in the mid to high teens (preferably a 16-18mpg average economy)... I know our 6.0 2500 GMC worktrucks/vans get close to 9mpg average, since they're always towing and hauling. For a daily driver, 9mpg is a bit too low.... and I would never be able to justify the price with the wifey.

Comparable in performance or fuel economy? I mean, I'd be impressed if we were talking performance, but if we're talking fuel economy then I really can't compare the two: I'd be shopping the 5.3L 6sp transmission

I'm really liking your numbers... The other thing I really need to consider, though is the cost of Premium vs. Regular fuel... Premium here is on average 30-40 cents more per gallon

I disagree that you should ignore economy, but if you tow much weight... then you have to consider that. The 5.3 is going to beat the rest on mpg, probably by ~2 mpg overall, so if you don't tow, it's a great option. Keep in mind, however, that to fully realize its "power off the line", it's going to need a tune to dial back TM, which has the potential to cause warranty issues. Not that it will... but just be aware.

As for the Tundra 5.7, only the 6.2 will get you to that performance level (stock).

I was under the impression that the 6.2 doesn't require premium? It needs it to get max HP/torque, but I was under the impression that it runs fine on 87 oct. Is that incorrect?

They have an amazing powertrain, no??? I'm amazed as to how powerful they are, while still getting the economy numbers they do.

I wont be towing to often: I have a 3500 pound jet-boat, and I may tow the occasional set of 4wheelers too. Down the road I may buy new toys, so flexibility will be nice...

A tune is 100% out of the option. My next vehicle will be 95% stock (Spray in bedliner and possibly and exhaust). I've modified all of my vehicles in the past (Explorer, Silverado, Wrangler), and have always found something to be unimpressive about it...

My explorer got an exhaust... Too much drone, and a stereo: Took up too much space...

My Silverado was got a DVD/gps headunit... Worked well, but didn't fit the truck well, and it was too tough to use while in motion due to the lack of physical buttons.

My Jeep has had two lift kits in it: Both of which have really altered the stock ride (for the worse). It has bigger tires on it, which have killed my fuel economy (11ish, with no balls to justify the gas consumption)... It has a set of speakers and a subwoofer that I love though! (Of course, it's just the factory Kicker upgrade package, since mine didn't come with the Infinity equipment.... So there's no space taken up and teh whole setup looks stock).

The owners manual says it is suggested to use premium, you can run 87 but you may have spark knock.

For me,and Chevyboy86 mentioned it,I don't worry about gas mileage in a full-size V8 truck, and as he also mentioned, theres no replacement for displacement, thats why when I ordered my '07 I was getting the 6.0 no question about it! Now that the 6.2 is out I would get that for sure.

No matter what you get though one things for sure......Its gonna' need Black Bear tuned to reach its full potential!

You're kidding right? The 6.2L 6spd w/3.42s will kill a 5.3L 4spd 3.73 truck in terms of performance (stock vs stock). The 6.2L is a mid 14 second truck... whats the 5.3 in that case, maybe mid 16s??

Premium gas is more expensive here too. I guess you really need to determine what's more important to you... how many miles do you drive a year? Is $5 a tank worth it? I spend $130-$150 extra a YEAR for premium fuel... and i enjoy driving my 6.2L every day. Do the math, you'll realize that the $0.30/gallon isn't a big deal (unless you're doing 30k/year... )
