I'm trying to figure out what engine I have exactly, but I'm not succeeding much at it. It's a 1990 C1500 with the 5.7L 350. The VIN is 1GCDC14K8LZ132837 if that helps at all.

Thanks!

The 8 th digit is the engine code. K is a 5.7L 350. The rpo code label is in the glove box.

Thanks! I'm going to brave the snow and the mess in my glove box and see if I can make heads or tails out of any labels in there.

Thanks to both of you, I appreciate your help!

I try not to go to the stealership around here. Helping out customers who just need basic information is apparently not worth their time.

BTW....Do you really have 500,000 miles on your truck? And if so is it the original eng/trans.? Have they been replaced/rebuilt?

Lol, sorry for the stealership comment. I used to live near great dealers, but around here, customer service is (simply put) lacking.

Yup, it's 500k and some change, though almost all of that is highway mileage due to commuting. Most of the components are stock, including the engine and transmission. I had the engine rebuilt about 10k miles ago and the transmission rebuilt last year. The engine rebuild was solid and I hope to get 10's of thousands more miles out of it assuming I keep the engine (it's looking like I am). The transmission, not so much. At the time of rebuild, a few syncros were dead and the 2nd gear fork was literally gone. Those issues were fixed, but now it makes the whole truck buzz at certain speeds and it has this lurch when starting from a stop. Oh well.

The only parts I have to change with any regularity are clutch system components. The clutch master and slave cylinders made for this model aren't the hottest, and it is for some reason rough on throwout bearings. I've owned other manual vehicles and never had these issues, so I know it's not my clutching style.

It's really been a solid truck. It tears up the pavement when I need it to, but also hauls trailers with everything from cars to tractors.

Good to hear,I'm so sick and tired of people saying that American vehicles don't last!

I just had to junk an '88 Corsica late last year that had almost 250,000 miles on the original engine/transmission....2.8-V6 3-spd. auto.trans.

My Dad bought it brand new in Feb.'88,The only reason I had to junk it was because the bottom was rusting out due to the harsh winters we have hear, and all the salt they put down on the roads in the wintertime.

To this day I hated getting rid of that car,It ran like a raped ape!!!

I think that like anything else, whether we're talking about customer service or vehicle longevity, there are the good ones and bad ones. Damn near any GM truck, Corsica, Bonneville, and quite a few other models will run to the moon and back provided you care for them (and some even if you don't!). As much as we sometimes don't like to admit it, the Big 3's engineers tend to know what they're doing. I bought a new car a couple years ago, and after looking at all the foreign options, I came back to domestic because it was the clear choice. This car probably won't stay with me for 20 years like my truck, but I'm pretty confident that if it's cared for, it'll go until the wheels fall off.

I'm sorry to hear you had to get rid of it. I've come close with mine but always managed to pull through. If I ever do have to get rid of it, I'm sure I'll be talking about the damn thing until my memory goes. :dunno:
