2009 Vs 2010 1500 Physical Differences?

Recommended Posts

My brother is contemplating a new 1500 and wondering what the differences are between the 09 and 2010 model years. Many 09 trucks are still on the lots and he's thinking of leveraging the fact that the 09 has depreciated already more than a 2010.

His question to me was: what are the differences of the 2009 vs the 2010?

From what I've seen at the dealership and read changes include,

-A few color changes

-head curtain side impact air bags on all models

-seat mounted side impact airbags standard on all models

-Uplevel stereo now has USB port for players like ipod

-Air conditioning now standard on ALL trim levels

-All engines are E85 compatible

-Variable Valve Timing VVT is been added to the 4.8 & 5.3 (Not 100% sure in this)

-All models now have Stabilitrak standard

-Front Door panels have a slightly different design (I believe this is only on the "pure truck" interior)

This might not be the entire list but it's what I've been able to gather

Big things are the standard 6-speed auto on the 5.3L engine in regular, extended, and crew cabs. Also standard side curtain and standard new front seat-mounted side airbags, along with the revised door trim and additional energy-absorbing foam, increased the IIHS side-impact crash ratings from "poor" to "acceptable". FlexFuel is standard across all of the V8 engines. Stabilitrak is standard across all modelsas well.

Here's the full list from GM:

•3.08 axle ratio and fuel saver mode standard with 5.3L V-8 for improved fuel economy – including 15 city / 21 hwy for 2WD and 4WD models and an increase to 22 hwy for the Sierra XFE

•FlexFuel capability on 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.2L engines. E85 comprises 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, reduces greenhouse gas and smog-forming emissions, is domestically produced and helps reduce dependence on petroleum

•Variable valve timing on 4.8L and 5.3L engines

•Six-speed automatic transmission on regular and extended cab models with 5.3L V-8

•Side curtain airbags and seat-mounted side airbags standard on all 1500 models

•USB connectivity in center console, enabling stored audio files to play through the audio system and battery charging for some handheld devices

•Revised interior door trim

•Rearview camera available on more models

•StabiliTrak electronic control system now standard on all 1500 models

•Two exterior colors: Taupe Gray Metallic (Chevy)/Storm Gray Metallic (GMC) and Sheer Silver Metallic (Chevy/GMC)

I like the updates to the 2010 models, except one. The "standard" rear axle ratio appears to be a 3.23 now. To be fair, the 3.23/6-spd has similar (or better) performance as a 3.73/4-spd combo.

The 3.42 is still available, but the few 2010s I've seen around here so far have a 3.23, so a 3.42 may become "special order".

mine has 3.42's

They added a cup holder to the door (now 2) and moved the door handle towards the front of the truck.

The 3.42 is standard w/ the 6.2 while the 5.3 gets a 3.23 "standard", from what I understand. The 5.3 can still be dealer-ordered w/ the 3.42, but I "think" they have to specify it as a no-cost option.

If you're referring to the NHT package (6.2L), it comes standard with the 3.73 gears.

Yes, the NHT gets a 3.73 and the non-NHT 6.2 gets a 3.42.

Did they happen to add any kind of storage area in the rear of the crew cabs? Like maybe the door panels?

None that I can see. Under the seat is about the only option.

Has anyone measured to see what the maximum height of a storage container might be? (I'm thinking for things like ball hitch, tools, etc).

My rear door panels have cutouts for storage like my 2000 ext cab had. Mine is an LT model, I heard the LTZ is still a solid panel.

I measured mine the other night for that reason (hitch, tie downs, bungee cords, etc). I was looking at getting a small container to go under just the passenger side of the bench, which is where our child seat is strapped in and therefore never gets folded up anyways. That way I could still have the option of folding up the longer side of the bench and carrying larger stuff on the floor there if needed.

The seat base slants downwards towards the back, so at the front the max height would be about 7.5" whereas when you get to the back it's only about 4.5" (the farthest I measured back was to the hump on the floor near the base of the seat, not all the way to the back cab wall because that space doesn't look useable). So I figure I'm going to look for a plastic container that's 16" deep by 18" wide, and for the height I'll just use the Dremel to cut it down so it slants down from 7.5" to 4.5" and fits about flush under the seat.

Someone should swap that into a GMT-800 and see how it works.

I'll volunteer.....

The biggest issue with that is the computer controls. The computers in GMT800 trucks have the ECM and TCM together in one PCM unit, but the GMT900s use a separate ECM and TCM. Also different is that GMT800s are Class-II Databus, and GMT900s are GMLAN.

It would be a real nightmare to get the 6 speed to work in a GMT800 I'm afraid.
