what do you think is the better motor?

I am looking to buy a 1500 4x4 ex-cab short bed, with an auto trans.

will not pull alot. I would like the most power I can get but I do not want to buy a gas station either.

thanks guys

no real huge difference in fuel consumption of a 5.3 and a 6.0...maybe a mile or 2 per gallon...so maybe 10 bucks a week more.

Both motors are virtually identical inside and out...the 6.0 has a longer stroke and bigger pistons giving it its larger displacement....but thats really the only difference. If you want more power... go with the 6.0L If you must have those 2mpg more....go for the 5.3...its no slouch either.

also on the older body styles 6.0 you'll get a 4l80 instead of the 5.3 older smaller 4l60 , and a little bigger diff.

I would get the 6.0l, the only way to get the 4l80e with a 6.0l you have to get a 2500. The 1500 6.0l comes with a 4l70 or 4l65e.

Hands down, 6.0. I've owned both and they get/got similar mileage but the 6.0 has way more power.

I ve had both too but my 5.3 has the 6 spd and my 6.0 did not. You want the 6 spd, the 5.3 feels the same as my 6.0 did in normal driving conditions. I am happy with the 5.3 after owning two 6.0 s prior but remember the old saying " There s no replacement for displacement" I think it s more important that you get the 6 spd than which motor you pick. It will give you a lower 1 st gear and a better highway gear for fuel mileage.

You could always get a Gear vendor overdrive with your 4 speed...now you have an 8 speed. :D:P

You still have that super low gear that the 4L60E has...and you have a gear in between each forward gear and a nice .50:1 top gear.

Im assuming you're looking for a used truck since you can't get the 6.0 in a 1500 anymore...

In which case, the 6.0 & 4L70E is a nice combo to have... but since you're shopping used I would not turn down a nicely optioned truck thats in mint condition with the 5.3L over a worn looking truck with the 6.0. If you have the choice between two very similar vehicles and the only major difference is the 5.3L vs the 6.0L, i'd personally get the 6.0 (since you'll probably spend the $$$ on the 5.3L just to get 6.0 power anyways  )

what is 4180 and 4160? are these the trannys?

I will be looking at older trucks. would like to get a 2000 or maybe a 2001

probably will have over 100K on it. will be tradeing off my 92 f150 and can not borrow a bounch of money.

will the 6.0 eat up the 5.7 vortek?

About what did your pickups with the 6.0 make on mpg? could you get 18mpg?

6 speed trans would be awsom but do not think I can go that new.

thanks again
