Cranking Up Torsion Bars

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, brand new to the forum. I have a 2008 GMC duramax and need some help. I have 285 70 R17 wheels and tires on at the current time. I want to crank the torsion bars up to get alittle more clearance on the front tires. How easy is this, and 1.75 inches is the max I should go right?? replys would be appreciated.

First, welcome to the forum.

Second, there is plenty of info on this topic covering the current GMT 900 and previous GMT 800 models. Try out the search feature.

Are your tires rubbing? Or are you just looking to level the stance?

If your tires are rubbing, cranking the bars won't necessarily stop the rubbing.

If you do decide to go ahead, get the truck on a flat surface and take measurments on both sides (center of wheel to underside of fender lip) this is your base point in case you want to restore it to the original height.

You will need to get an alignment to correct for the altered suspension geometry.

You may also want to consider an aftermarket shock for a lifted front. I used Bilstein 5100 for 1-2" lift. Not cheap but made a huge differance overall.

One last thing to consider, by cranking the bars you will be increasing angles of the CV joints and balljoints which may lead to premature wear.
