Buying Retrax For Sierra. Opinions?

So i'm in the market for a tonneau cover for my 08 Sierra. I just found out i'm getting relocated to Corpus Christi, TX from Charleston, SC and its about a 1300 mile drive. I want to be able to throw suitcases and boxes of whatever back there and keep them safe (Uncle Sam is moving the household items). My dad swears by the Retrax as he has one on his F-250, but once he told me the price-around $1000- i was kinda turned off. But then he offered to pay half of it, so I'm looking at around $500 for a brand new Retrax. Is this too good to turn down? I did a search but not too many ppl have them on here and i wanted to get some feedback. Also, how much did you guys pay and where di u get it? Thanks

I will be watching this thread with interest. I am also in the market for a retractable bed cover, and right now I am leaning toward the Retrax.

I have a Retrax cover on my 2007 crew cab. Best thing I ever bought. They are not water tight of course but I love mine. Had a box turn over in the back of the cab and cut my leather seat.

I would not buy the Retrax. I had a similar Pace Edwards for my last truck and never put it on. The canister to store the cover takes up a lot of room in the front of the bed. So much that I would have been removing it frequently. It takes up the same amount of space whether it is open or closed.

I had a vinyl cover on the last truck.

I bought a tri fold aluminum cover (I chose Bakflip) for the new truck. When it is folded open it is up against the rear window not using any space in the bed whether it is open or closed. I really like it. Aluminum tri folds are available for 60% of the Retrax price.

Also I believe the Retrax type covers leak more than tri fold covers. The great thing about the vinyl cover is that it did not leak at all.

I've had a Retrax cover on for 5 years now and it was one of the best options I installed on my truck. Yes, it takes up a little room but that's only a problem once in a while (not very often). It does lock, is very sturdy and although not 100% waterproof, nothing I've ever put in the bed has ever gotten wet. It was expensive, but I'd buy it again. I also like being able to lock it in any position.

I've had a retrax on mine for over 2 years and I love it. If something happened to it, I would order another the next day.

Yeah I just got one and I am going to install tomorrow. Any last minute advice or pointers to give? Also did anyone install it on a truck with bed rails? My truck has bed rails and have been pondering how to make that work.

Josh and I put a Retrax Pro on Project Sierra a few weeks ago. We have been pretty impressed. Yes, the canister takes up some room in the front. If you still want to use your bed for dirt or mulch, it may not be the best option. If you have a tailgate lock, it turns your entire bed into one huge lockable trunk. It's 95% waterproof, which is acceptable I guess.

The quality is outstanding. The entire system slides extremely smooth. It also looks really slick!

Our write-up detailing the install and our thoughts about the Retrax Pro will be up in a few weeks.

RETRAX all the way!!! Blows the Pace Edwards outta the water!!!

I put a Retrax Pro on my truck about 2 months ago now. It was the best $1500.00 I spent on my truck so far. I went thru a big down pour this week end and had maybe 1/3 cup of water in the bed of my truck. So I agree not 100% water proof but close. I used it to make a large trunk for the truck. :jester:

If you have your heart set on the roll up style bed cover then give Bakflip a look too. I thought about getting the bakflip or there is another version but I didn't because of the cost. But it sounds like you have the $$$ so take a look at all of them.

ive seen far too many broken retrax to ever even dream of buying one, truck cover usa makes a far better rolling cover if you're dead set on a rolling cover. i bought a truck to use it as a truck and losing 10 inches of bed space and having something that i have to be careful around and not get mulch dirt hay debris in the tracks is not very practical for a truck. the truckcover usa is the best one i've EVER installed hands down, i've seen countless roll n locks pace edwards retrax and roll back (bak flip brand) broken or poor fitting...the last retrax unit's i have seen are very prone to scratches, even a fignernail would scratch them ,i dont know if they've changed at all as i try to avoid selling them. even through their display in the dumpster after issues and poor customer service
