Have The Fuel Pumps Been Fixed For Gmt900s?

While they seem to last quite a while both my buddy (gmt800 tahoe) and a bunch of our work trucks have had fuel pumps go bye bye at inconvenient times.

 

My buddy lost his pump (~90k) in the middle of nowhere in saskatchewan moving down here from alaska...packed up to the gills with all his and his gf's stuff and towing his mustang. Good thing they had that car with them.

theres no issue really with the pumps man, the main reason they bite the dust so quick is because people have these great ideas to drive until the needle is buried in the E, lack of changeing fuel filters tend to put a bullet in the pumps too...they die when they die, nothing lasts forever unless your emperor palpatine

The fuel filters are not service-able on these trucks anymore, and as far as running the tank to E hurting the pump, it seems to me that they should either figure another way to keep the pump cool or calibrate the fuel tank gauge to read E when there is really 1/4 tank left. You know that people are always going to run the tank empty so I guess pumps will continue to fail early until they fix this. Or maybe the notice on the fuel gauge should read "UNLEADED FUEL ONLY: 1/4 TANK MINIMUM TO SAVE PUMP" .....That I would love to see :puke:

That is not true. The fuel pumps in our trucks are cooled by the gasoline passing through them, NOT the surrounding fluid. Running it down until the tank is empty has little to no affect on the longevity of the pump.

I have also heard that the fuel in the tank helps to cool the pump, along with the fuel passing through the pump. I got to talking with the servce guy at the shop that replaced the fuel pump in our sunfire when it died at about 150k. He said the issue is not just in the summer that you should try to keep the pump submerged, but also in the winter when the moisture in the tank can frost up around the pump. He wasnt telling me much I havent heard before but he helped to confirm what I was already pretty sure off.

 

I try to keep my vehicles at 1/4 or more at all times. If I know its going to sit for a few days or a week I fill it up before hand. 55k on the truck with no fuel pump issues (knock on wood) and replaced the one in the car at 115k this past summer when it took a crap.

The fuel cools the pump and when a driver runs his vehicle low the possibility of the pump running dry will certainly shorten the life of the pump. If a driver runs out of fuel and tries to start or turn on the ign. switch to engage the pump it runs dry and will seize up.

When we are all done for the day and rolling back to the garage or on our way back home haha, get some overtime for that one.

OK.... you go right ahead and keep on running your tank to zero/empty... good on you to ignore all this advice .....

 

In the old days... (like on my '76 3/4Ton) we used to intentionally run the dual tanks to dry (waiting for the engine to cough/sputter on the highway) before switching over to the other tank ... but now we have fuel injected engines and the pumps are electic and are in the tank and it is a totally different technology....

I'm sure as we start seeing some of the GMT-900 members own on here approaching the 70,000-100,000 mile mark we'll find out if GM fixed the high heat failure rate these crappy pumps have had in the GMT-800s.

From my experience it seems that ever since GM switched to the non-serviceable fuel filter setup around 2005 I see far less fuel pump failures. I have no explination for this. Most of the time on fuel pump failures on the older trucks I've found that the fuel filter were plugged.

The pumps were not crappy it was the high heat of the fuel from recirculating all the time that diminished reliability. The return less fuel systems have been around on other MFR's since the 1990's with good results. The return less fuel system's were required by the FED's for the reduction of fuel vapors.

 

I'm sure as we start seeing some of the GMT-900 members own on here approaching the 70,000-100,000 mile mark we'll find out if GM fixed the high heat failure rate these crappy pumps have had in the GMT-800s.

is it possible to leave it in there and put an inline pump in and just cut the wires? i put mpfi from an 86 camaro with 2.8 into an 84 s10... we used an inline pump and it worked great, sold it with 50,000 on it no issues. i just wonder if it's an issue to suck fuel through the pump?

Can anyone answer this one:

 

If the fuel pump is getting louder (the high whine sound), does that mean it is about to croak? Or does it mean there is a lot of back pressure on it?

Pump in my 01 Silverado was loud from day one. It was still going strong at 90K when I sold it. Wingnut bought it and I believe he is still running on the same pump a couple of years later.

 

I know these pumps get a bad rap, but I've never had one go out under 100,000 miles. That's pretty good pump life if you ask me.

    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
