Step Bars Any Use?

My new 2010 Crew cab has arrived, and I am just finalizing a few options.

 

Are the tubular side step bars really of any use? I didn't have them on my last truck, but maybe it's one of those options that once you have you want? Might be helpful but it just seem like the thing that I have been thinking in the past that I wished I had them.

 

My fleet rep is saying once I get them I will love them.

 

So what does everyone think of them? Do they really help at all in getting in and out? Do they protect the truck at all from parking lot idiots?

 

What are the pros and cons?

 

The GM ones are apparently stainless steel and chromed so if they get pitted they won't rust.

 

I will post some pics once I pick it up next week.

Well honestly if you plan doing any suspension work such as lifting, certainly might help getting in and out, but if not, if anything just enhances the apperances of your truck.

I love having the steps!! its easier getting in and out plus it really helps to protect the seat from getting beaten up from sliding down the seat! the only cons i suppose would be if your doing alot of off roading they may get beat up a bit but they dont hang any lower than the frame so its never been an issue for me!! Goodluck

My wife is vertically challenged, 4'11" she uses them every time she gets in or out.

I never thought of the beating the edge of the seat being helped by the bars. No doubt, my '07 had the side of the seat base all crinkled up from sliding in and out of the vehicle.

 

I don't plan on lifting the vehicle, I got the 6.2L with all the towing and other options so that I can tow my boat, but it is my daily drive for work.

Oh it def helps if you actually use them to get in and out!! My truck now has 165,000 miles on it and theres barely a crease in the leather seats. i scream at people that slide outta there seats instead of using the steps! lol

I could step up on the bars kick my feet on them get all the snow and dirt off before getting in the truck. Plus they are kinda nice when washing it because you can step on them to wash to roof without getting the inside dirty. I just consider them somewhere to be before I am in the truck. Unless you are doing any lifting they are mostly just appearance items. Chrome steps really accent a black truck.

I have historically NOT been a fan of the steps. However, when I move up to a GMT900 I'll have the 6" oval steps for sure. Primarily because these trucks don't have rockers that serve to keep the water, mud, etc kicked up by the tires from immediately impacting the door seal. The steps will somewhat serve as the rocker panel below the doors that GM decided wasn't necessary. I guess that's because like many other things, they became more worried about selling trucks to the crowd that doesn't use them as trucks :-).

i need some for my truck it sits high and i got a leveling kit so it is even higher. looking at sets of stainless steel to match the exhaust and wheels (different material, same look)

I have a 2500HD with the black tubular GM steps and LOVE them. My pervious truck was a GMC Yukon and I never ever used the steps on it. But the 2500 is just a little higher and I use them everytime I get in.

+1...this is the only reason I have them. If it was just me I would never have installed them. The look is OK to me but with just my leveling kit the need for them just doesn't exist!

I have the chrome tubular ones on my truck and love them. They look good and they are functional. It's not something that I have to have but it is one of those things that since I do have them, I do use for sure. As also mentioned they come in handy when washing or drying the truck. Vertically challenged people also appreciate then when getting in as well.

 

I definitely don't regret having them at all.

Since my 2500 HD is a couple inches higher, my wife needs them to get in and out. And my 84-year old mother definitely needs them when I bring her along. I use although I could get by without them. Since I do some muddy roads in Mexico, I had to put on the Weathertech mud guards to keep all the mud from accumulating at the front of the bars.
