Suspension Package...what Is Missing?

Recommended Posts

Guys,

When I go off-road and go over a pump, the nose of the truck dives like crazy and I already got a nice hit very close to the front differential. I am looking for the minimum parts to give me a Z71 capability, basically what is really missing? skid plates & Bilstein shocks enough?

I have 4x4 LTZ, 4.1, g80, and this what is in the Z71 package for the same 2008 model year:

Suspension Package, Off-Road

1 - Includes off-road jounce bumpers, specially tuned springs and

gas charged mono tube shocks, (G80) heavy-duty locking rear

differential, (B71) front and rear wheel flares, (N87) 4 - 18" x 8"

(45.7 cm x 20.3 cm) aluminum wheels, (QXN) P265/65R18

on-/off-road, blackwall tires, (NZZ) Skid Plate Package, (BVV)

tubular assist steps, (K47) high-capacity air cleaner and Z71

Off-Road Appearance Package, which consists of unique front

fascia, satin chrome door handles, grille insert and mirror caps.

Also includes (V76) front frame-mounted recovery hooks.

what year is your truck? Edit: nevermind... 2008

And yeah... you probably need stiffer shocks front AND rear. For offroad use, most prefer the Bilstein 5100s. Skid plates are a good idea too... but they dont do anything in terms of performance (like the Z71 sticker does :P ), they're just for protection

I have 4x4 LTZ with the following:

G80       Differential, heavy-duty locking rear

GT5       Rear axle, 4.10 ratio

KNP      Cooling, auxiliary transmission oil cooler

ZW7       Suspension Package, Premium Smooth Ride (note: Shocks and springs!)

JD9       Brakes, 17" disc/disc

RCS      Wheels, 4 - 20" x 8.5" (50.8 cm x 21.6 cm) polished aluminum

This is what is in the Z71 package for the same 2008 model year:

Off-Road Appearance Package, which consists of unique front

fascia, satin chrome door handles, grille insert and mirror caps.

Also includes (V76) front frame-mounted recovery hooks.

You are missing the Z71 decals, that's the problem. Make sure you order the set that say 4x4 so that you get that added performance! lol

Many thanks, great input...that will help to level as well.

Try some Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks or Regular Bilsteins

I prefer bilstein if I have a choice, are the regular ones adjustable?, I installed the bilstein adjustable on my f-150 an got 2" lift.

Off roading in a 5500 pound truck is going to be mediocre at best. Taking some mild trails and a little mud, snow, or ice is all these trucks are designed for and capable of without a LOT of modification. It would take at least 6 inches of lift and some real suspension upgrades to even come close to what a stock base Jeep can do.

It just is what it is.

Agree!, may be I will do that one day...I wish!

I'm not trying to be a smart guy here. My point is only that it takes a lot of mods to make a large truck really off road worthy. You can improve the performance a bit by going to better shocks... just don't expect miracles.

z71 shocks are tenacco, they are just gas monotubes which bilsteins are anyways...i have bilstein HDs on my truck and it still rides stiff but it dosen't thrash around on bumps like my oem shocks did...your missing jounce bumpers and a bigger stabalizer bar if your trying to work your truck into a z71..

But the z71 package as dicribed for my model year does not mention a bigger stabalizer bar..may be I have that already, my truck is 4x4 , g80,4.1 and tow package

eh maybe they diden't carry the bigger bar over from the gmt-800s...are you rolling on 20s? they will add to the harshness of the ride...
