Slip Yoke Question

When greasing the slip-yoke on your truck, how much marine grease do you put in and on the splines?

I had the clunk, last week I took it out and it was dry, no grease at all. I greased the splines in as far as I could reach my finger and very lightly coated the outside of it. The clunk is still there and actually might be worse than before.

How much grease do you guy’s recommend putting in there? Also, does anyone know the torque specs on the 4 bolts that hold the axle to the rearend?

Thanks!

I used at least 3 or 4 ounces in mine. Noise hasn't come back.

Did you mean the drive shaft to the rear end?

Just tighten the fasteners snugly and use some blue Loktite on the threads.

Mine is 18lb ft....yours should be the same. Service manual doesn't call for locktite.

[ Service manual doesn't call for locktite.

That does not mean that it is a bad idea to use it in this application.

Thanks guys! Yea, I meant Drive shaft to rear end, long day… lol

I noticed the clunk was almost gone today on the way into work, wondering if it has to do with the temp being a little cooler today than the past few days? Who knows.

I’ll prob take it off again this weekend and check it out

Just keep in mind that the "CLUNK" can do serious damage to the transfer case (if it is 4wd) so don't take it lightly, it is not just annoying it is damaging.

Naah. I put over 130,000 miles on my old 99 that had the slip yoke clunk all its life and it was not damaging. Just annoying. Many others from years ago on this forum had the same issues. Most were able to fix it by using the correct autotrack fluid in the transfer case along with replacing the slip Yoke with a nickle plated slip yoke, which was what GM's fix was for the issue.

Mine destroyed my transfer case rear bearing requiring a T Case rebuild for $1700

I wasn't aware there was a correct amount. I pretty much just jammed a whole bunch in there and spread it around with my finger. 7k miles later, the clunk is still gone.

Pro Tip: Use marine grade grease.
