Just curious, what ar the laws on this? I have heard you can only leaglly drive the vehiccle if it has an engine that was offered in it from the factory, is that true?

Not sure where else I could have posted this... Also, I'm not necessarily debateing pulling this move I just want to know how it could be legal.

My question: How would they know?

i don't think engine really matters unless your rolling around with a coal power plant under the hood....to be road legal it has to have things like mirrors, markers and head lights along with being safe(working brakes, good tires etc) if you do not meet federal emmisions laws it is not road legal...

If you have emissions and someone can actually tell a difference which I doubt, then it might not fly. But round here, we don't got no emissions testing, so we can do whatever we want.

the biggest factor to road legality, is safety...emissions does play a factor, it is not greatly enforced here but if your caught without a cat have fun with a couple grand fine, if diesels are caught with the dye from off road diesel in their fuel system the truck can be seized by the DNR

I think there are rules on engine power and whats streetable (at least in Canada)

Not in the Canada that I live in. E-testing in Ontario is based on the VIN and visual inspection. There is no rule that says you cannot put a LS7 into your Cobalt, but it must pass the etest every 2 years. As far a power goes, does not matter as well, other than the use of nitrous.

That being said, I think in the US, every state is its own little country as far as laws goes. Asking a world wide community a question that relates to your county is sort of meaningless.

This site is a world wide community?

What would that take to swap? I assume a new harness and ECU, then it should bolt right in, right? I have no emissions laws in the state I register (Alaska) so I'm not too much worried. I figure another problem would be getting it insured...maybe?

Your going to need to provide more info for all we know your putting a Briggs and Straton in there.

I was actually looking at the possibility of ripping an LS3 out of a Pontiac G8 GTX. It would be a modern LS3. The truck os an '05 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD with a 5.3.

Yeah, have you even read the thread? He asked if it would bolt right in with saying what "it" was. I'm ignorant, but not that ignorant.

EDIT: I'm a dumbass it was in the title all along!

In Pa, we have emission inspections, and it would have to have all the pollution control devices on it as it came from the factory. :D

Otherwise, I believe you would be fine.

"Engine Swap Laws, 5.3 to LS3?" I think that describes "it" right in the title.
