Bad Factory Paint Job-options?

So I picked up a 2010 black 2500HD GMC crew cab this past Thursday. BLACK, yeah, what was I thinking smile.gif I washed it a day later because we had some rain and it got buggy from the 85 mile trip home. I noticed a couple little spots on the truck, then a couple more, then a couple more...how didn't I see these when I was buying it is what I thought? Hidden by the rain spots? Anyway, I'll put a link up to picasa. I took it to an auto body place and they suspect these are spots that occurred during original painting. It looks like the paint didn't stick to the truck. Maybe a water or oil spot on the truck during paint process. There are about 12 spots, some worse than others. The worst ones are on the roof. Looks like something acidic ate through the paint, but autobody guy says more likely it happened during the painting. The autobody wrote up an estimate to repaint the panels that have the spots-hood, roof, drivers door, passengers door, drivers cab, drivers bed rail, passengers bed rail-$3500! Dealer is calling me back on Monday. Guess they have there own body guy they are going to talk to. They said they'd like to keep manufacturers paint on if possible. Touching up is an option, but how is that going to look on the black truck? Not sure what to think/do. Repaint a brand new truck? Settle for touch up? I could deal with a chip here or there on a new truck, but some of these spots are about a 1/4" round and to the primer and a couple look like to the metal? I traded in a 2004 that didn't have a single spot like these? Here are a few of them.

There is no way I would settle for a touch up on a brand new vehicle. I actually had something like this happen when I got my 07 Cobalt. It was cloudy and rainy the day I got it and it looked great. The next day when I went out to the garage I noticed 2 spots that are very similar to the ones in your pictures and called the dealer, they told me to bring it to them so they could look at it. Took it there and had the service manager come out, he asked if I would leave the car there overnight gave me a rental car and I left. Returned the next day and was told I needed to re-sign papers for the replacement car. Dealer said they were sending the car back to GM to find out what went wrong.

Hope your dealer takes care of you, don't settle for anything but a replacement.

EDIT: Car was also black.

email from dealer:

I've just looked over

the photos/estimate you sent over to Scott on your 2010 GMC Sierra.

These types of spots are usually caused by either tree sap, fluid leaking

onto the vehicle during transport from the factory, or some other kind of

environmental debris that lays on the paint and is then "cooked" into it due

to the dark color of the paint. There are two ways we can deal with it: one

is we can touch it up and paint seal over the top of them, and the other is

to sand/prime/refinish each panel that has the spots like your estimate

shows. GM will take care of it at no cost to you, but we will need the truck

for 7-10 days to do the repairs. They will pay to put you in a rental while

we are doing repairs, so all we need to do is figure out when you can bring

it over to get things going.

I know Scott is off for a couple of days, but you can contact him or myself

and we can get things set up for you. Right now we are taking appointments

for the middle of September starting the week of the 13-17 if that works for

you? Let us know and we can get everything handled for you.

Thanks,

Looks like what brake fluid will do to paint almost immediately when it hits it. I definitely wouldnt' be happy with the "touch up" method.

Ew, those are bad looking little marks. I'd definitely have the dealer do something with it. As, they used to would fix and repair paint damage do to nature's conditions under warranty.

Screw that! Tell them to fix it and paint it and resell it to someone else. 7-10 days for your new truck my a$$... That is just ridiculous... You just bought the damn thing for heaven's sake!

Let us know how it works out...

:sigh:

i have some of those on my roof on my 2001 silverado and i have no idea what they are... look exactly the same as those

Get it fixed the way the autobody shop recomended. And it sounds like you have a good dealer, if they are offering you all that based on pictures you know they only want to make sure that your as happy as can be with the truck not just that you bought it.

Wow. Think I got a good dealer! Just got of the phone with one of the managers. He said they will do whatever it takes to make me happy. If I want a new one, they'll find a new one. He did say they have a top notch professional body shop on hand and would guarantee the painted panels for the life of the truck. He has been looking though and is having a hard time locating an exact match to what I have (2010 in Black). He asked if I had a second and third color choice and he will do a search for them too. Now I don't know what to do....

I think if I was you I would go for a new truck. I guess fully painted panels would be okay...but still they have to take things apart and put back together. I would just get a new one.

i would get a new truck... repainting the vehicle is going to hurt it in trade in value or depreciate the value more, any car that has repainted panels brings red flags....

imo - get a another black 2010

Got my new truck Saturday. Looks good. Identical to the black one except in Pure Silver. The only difference is it doesn't have the roof marker lights which doesn't really matter to me. They really made the process easy. The dealer is Markquart Motors in Chippewa Falls, WI. Good people there. Would definately go back.
