Scenario: There is a big big mud hole ahead and your not sure whether to use 4WD or not, do you...

A) See how far you can go in 2WD, then put it in 4WD when/if you get stuck?

OR

B) Put in 4HI before you hit the hole and hope you make it out?

I have some people say to only use 4WD when your stuck.

However, Im the type of person that puts it in 4WD before i hit the mud pit because I'd rather give it my all and hit with all 4 wheels spinning

Some people are just plain dumb then

Most of the time, if you get stuck in 2wd, it's now too late to use 4x4 since you've probably buried the rear which then acts like an anchor.

Use 4x4.

The only time I use 2wd offroad is if i KNOW i won't get stuck OR if i WANT to get stuck (see how far i can go for fun) and have backup there to get me out if I can't get myself out.

Maybe its just me, but if you are truly stuck in 2wd and cant move forward or backward at al, then you arn't going to be able to engage the electric transfer case on the nbs and nnbs trucks.

I had multiple run ins with this with my 98, 03, and 04 trucks. You would think I would have learned quicker.

I havent had that problem in quite a while, because I now switch to 4high as soon as the terrain turns loose, (with the exception of gravel roads of course).

Correct me if I am wrong, but I had this issue more than once where my electric t-case would not shift into 4x after I was already at a stand still in 2wd. My understanding is that you stil have to roll forward or backward a certain amount to engage.

Ive barried my truck in snow with 2 wheel drive and i was still able to engage into 4wd. Mines also electronic transfer case

Kind of hard to explain.. but lets just say that if 2 gears in the front diff aren't meshed up perfectly then you will need to roll a few inches or so for the front diff to engage.

Yeah it all depends on whats under the snow and what caused you to get stuck.

If you're not sure if you can get through it and you don't have another method of getting out, don't bet on 4x4 getting you out after you're stuck.... especially in mud where you'll spin the tires until the axle is holding the weight of the truck and the wheels are technically in the air. If that happens and you don't have solid ground under the front tires, 4x4 ain't going to help.

4WD to start with for sure....no point in getting stuck in 2wd then fighting to get out after...

I always put it in 4wd if I don't think I will make it through in 2wd or if I think it will be even close. Like someone else said, I paid extra for 4wd so why wouldn't I use it? Going through mud and other slick stuff is all about momentum, once you lose your momentum there isn't much 4wd will do for you in alot of situations true. This isn't always the case. I have been stuck in 2 and switched to 4 to get out, but I'd rather just pop it in 4 to start with.

I like to see how far I can go in 2wd first. If I start to get stuck Ill stop and put it in 4Lo before I get it buried to far in where its too late.
