Should I Buy This?

I am looking at buying a 2001 Suburban. Here are the details. I don't know what to do in this situation. Any input would be appreciated.

Color: White

dvd installed, but does not have remote...tv screen is not powering on, so wondering if I need remote or something else done???

8.1l engine, k2500 LT

Leather

no roof

towing, running boards

This vehicle is extremely well kept both inside and out. Very clean, just missing two headrests. The kicker for me with this vehicle and what I am really nervous about is the 202500 miles on it.

I am having a mechanic look at. The exhaust has a rattle, and I was already told it will run me $20 to weld and fix. The engine is leaking somewhere and I am hoping the mechanic will look into that tomorrow.

It runs very well, alignment is great, new tires, great power, no weird noises, steering is tight.

My friend is selling it, as it was one of 14 vehicles he purchased at the auction. He said he will give it to me for $5800. He has just spent $400 to do a tuneup, new spark wires, and whatever else they do for that kind of thing.

I am trying to get back on my feet and will be putting 3000-4000 down, but will make pymts for a short time on the balance. I am worried for this kind of mileage I will be spending another $2000 or more if something major goes wrong sooner than later. Would this be a good vehicle for a couple of years, or am I biting off more than I can chew. I was hoping this would put me in a more favorable equitable situation, with a safe car to haul my family around.

If I haven't detailed everything for you, in order to give me some input, please ask. I will try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks so much!

I would only buy a vehicle like this if I had a large trailer to tow. This thing is a gas hog, you will be lucky to get 10 MPG out of it. High mileage does not help either. I would look elsewhere.

i would honsetly stay away from it. who knows the history and pm26 is right. its going to be awful on gas and no reason to buy it if your not towing. it is a badass vehicle though.

I had a 2500HD with that motor. I would never buy another vehicle with that motor again, regardless of the mileage.

Were you looking for a 2500 surburban *before* your friend bought this one at auction?

I would keep shopping. An 8.1 with over 200k sounds more like an extra vehicle or play toy to me. It sure wouldn't be my first choice for a family vehicle. If $6000 is your limit, I would look for a 1500 tahoe or suburban with lower miles. Your wallet will thank you in the long run. Heck, I would rather have a '97-'99 model with the 5.7 and 120k, than an '01 with 200k. Personally, I've always found that an older, lower mileage vehicle will be more dependable than a higher mileage vehicle that is a few years newer. IMO, an extra 50k miles is a lot harder on a vehicle than a couple extra years of sitting in the garage.

If money is tight I would not get it. It may be a good deal, but still not good for you. You always run a risk of something needing a repair at that high of mileage. And I would not get a 8.1 2500 unless I was going to tow a heavy trailer. Gas will eat you up in that thing. You can get 1500's a good bit cheaper. Price would not be low enough for me to buy it anyway.
