A couple months back I traded in my '03 Silverado (which I really liked but was worn out) for a 2010 1500 4x4. I took a test ride and being new and all it was great.After extensive driving, About 1500 mi. I think this thing rudes worse that my Dad's old Oldsmobile with worn out struts. Floaty, bounces over humps in the road and the front end geats upset whengoing over rough spots in the road. I feel like there is no shock dampening. I had it to the dealer with no answer or result. What do you guys think?

I too had a 03 Silverado, mine was 2wd with the "smooth ride suspension package". I had original shocks on it from new until I traded it with 86,000 miles.

I traded it in for my 09 Sierra which is a Z71 4X4.

 

I find the ride to be much harsher in my new truck, almost too harsh. Part of that is the trailering / handling suspension.

 

another factor beyond suspension is tire pressures, what pressure are you running? maybe up the pressure to about 40 psi for a firmer ride.

its gotta be all in your mind... put 150,000 miles on a GM truck or suv and see how it rides..... well my suburbans not to bad but you can definatley tell something is worn in the front end

I too have the trailering /handling suspension which makes me wonder how the base truck would ride. I run the recommended 35 psi any more I find that it increases the tires spring rate too much making them sensitive and bouncy. I think that is part of the reason why the front end gets upset over bumps.

I put 224,000 mi on my '03 Silverado and it rode and handled great. Of course after the original shocks wore out at about 25k mi. I put on Edelbroke IAS to improve the handling I don't think these shocks are valved right (actually I never found OEM GM shocks to be very good on any of my vehiclesand I have/had a few.)

I love mine :drool: 52,000 miles and no complaints.

 

 

+1 (Actually 65k now, but I'm still with you. It rides.... well.... like a truck.)

Almost 9K miles on my 2010 and it rides 100X better than my 2000 ever did.

I have a 2008 Sierra Denali AWD and I think it rides more firm/harsh than my 2004 Nissan Titan 4WD did.

 

edit: Should mention I have the 20" wheels - could cause some of the harshness.

11K on mine and it rides smoothly compared to the 800 of the same stature.

 

My '10 is a RCSB Z71, and with the front suspension being what it is, the ride is much better than the GMT-800 RCSB. My father has an '04 RCLB which because of its length always rode very nicely, and I'd say mine is similarly smooth, whereas every RCSB GMT-800 that i've been in has been a very rough ride.

 

Sure the shocks are a little bit stiff with the off-road package, but its a truck..

I notice the same nervous feeling in the front end when going over bumps. Unlike my 05 Tacoma, which was more car-like, I sorta expected the GMC to ride more like a truck

Although I've never driven a 900 for any length of time, my truck, at almost 310k, rode very nicely before I put the 18's and all terrains on it. Even now, it rides way better than that '11 GS Corvette I put 90 miles on.. :drool:

+1. My 2000 Z71 used to have wheel hop on any road imperfections. My 08 SD rides awesome.

My 2010 has 4x4, but no Z71. It has the Z85 suspension or w/e. I LOVE the ride in my 2010. One of the things I REALLY like. I have zero complaints, even off road, and I get nothing but un-solicited compliments from people riding in it. I have heard it compared to a Cadillac more times than I can count. My 03 on the other hand was rough, but it was also a CCLB 2500.

    • I thought I was building a HD 3500 srw, maybe I was lost.
    • No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.  
    • It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month. 
    • It is working as designed.  NHT and non NHT trucks have the same exact transmission cooling setup.  NHT just gets a larger radiator.     The transmission cooler loop on these is as follows.     -Transmission out goes into an oil to water heat exchanger (item #1 in the first illustration below).  This exchanger has engine coolant opposite the transmission fluid and uses engine coolant to warm and then regulate the transmission fluid temperature when its in the operating window.   - From the cooler it goes to a thermal bypass valve (item #11 in the 2nd illustration below).  If the ATF has not reached the temp to open the bypass (194F), it loops back.   - When it reaches 194F, the thermostat opens and ATF then flows out to the oil to air auxiliary cooler (item #17 in the 2nd illustration) at the front of the truck.  From there it goes back to the transmission.     Your only fix would be to swap for the PPE thermal bypass delete block which will open the loop to the aux cooler all the time.  It will STILL run warm, probably 170-200F, but that's as low as you'll get it as its still flowing through the oil to water exchanger.      
    • Most say the oil temperature needs to above the boiling point of water to rid it of moisture and long enough to dry it. Many think that is about a hour at 212 F or more. Those people have never line dried cloths in a Midwest winter. Leave a pan of water sitting on the counter and eventually it all evaporates. So heat drives the time it takes. Water in oil under 175 F, the Nitration initiation temperature, is a minimum then for temperature and samples I've done that use Karl Fisher method say about a hour (in a healthy well tuned motor) over 175 F will dry it to under 800 ppm. Low enough to not be much of a factor. Motors with weak rings will take longer and the colder the air temperature the longer it takes.   On a cold motor there is also the condensation temperature. Blowby gases that contain moisture are subject to that cold cylinder wall, like sweat on a glass of ice tea. But also subject to the Law of Partial Pressures. Wear studies by GM and the DOD  indicate wear is a real issue below 85 F and a concern to 140 F but doesn't become a minimal factor until about 160 F. You know this intuitively when you see water vapor exit the exhaust pipe until the system gets above the dew point. It isn't magic, it's physics and it fascinates me. I know you didn't ask but....I over share sometimes. 😉    You keep the Camaro's high and tight.
