High Mileage Oil

What is the difference in regular synthetic and high mileage synthetic ? Reason for asking is ive always used Mobil 1 or Pennziol Platinum. Keep it serviced as youre suppose too. Its never used any oil between changes. I decided to pop the hood and check the fluids today. The oil seems to be down about 2 quarts. The oil that is in it has about 3k miles on it and isnt discolored much at all. I have no leaks on top nor underneath the truck. Anyone have any idea what may cause something like this ? Would I benefit from a high mileage oil ? Thanks in advance !

probably a couple bucks..... I personally think the high mileage oils are a hoax done for money.

They are formulated just a tad thicker and have extra seal conditioners...

someone goofed and did not put in enough oil at last oil change?

I can't see your truck suddenly using oil. It's just not a characteristic of these engines. Some use a little from birth, but one that hasn't been using oil isn't all that likely to start abruptly unless it springs a leak.

 

I also agree that the so called high mileage oils are pretty much marketing hooey.

 

Change your oil again (or in your case maybe just top it off) and keep a close watch on it.

If I remember correctly on my 2000 5.3 it only takes a quart to totally fill it from the bottom of the cross hatch to full on the the dipstick. Reading on these forums,it seems that a quart for 3000 miles isnt too bad! I used the high mileage syn oil on my last oil change just because it was on sale and I wasn't sure if it had synthetic oil in it when i bought it. I figured i would do one time just to condition any seals etc... So far its been good and i have no leaks.(176,000 kilometers)

it takes 6 quarts to fill a vortec v8...i run high mileage oil, love it..more cleaner,gasket conditioner and it dosen't burn off easily

Only thing I did was switch from 5W-30 to 10W-30 as my truck got up in miles. I don't believe the marketing of high mileage oils.
